buckee
[ QUOTE ] My opinion the bear should not have been shot. [/ QUOTE ] Living in an area where we have lots of bears. I tend to lean toward shooting the bear. Once they get too familiar with humans and start raiding like that, they will keep coming back and they are dangerous. On another note though, I don't think he should have even attempted to use a .22 cal. What was he thinking ? He's just darn lucky he got one good shot in on that bruin, it died quickly and isn't still running around wounded and angry. He could have very well been attacked using such an insufficient calibre to do the job. If your going to shoot at an animal like that, then shoot to kill....don't fool around with a pee-shooter
TreeStandBowHunter
Re: Bear Killed in Missouri LIFENRA can vouch for this one...bears have in the past been visitors to the city of Lebanon, PA. They get into the city and they don't know what to do and they go nuts. I just can't remember if they shot them or just put them to sleep and released them back to the mountains. I remember 2 instances when I was growing up that a bear came to town
6sixpoint_nobrows
Re: Bear Killed in Missouri yeah, he shouldnt have shot it, that wasnt a smart thing to do, i dont care if he did knock a few boards of his shed, nail them right back up, and call the dnr and see what they can do about the bear. dont blow it away because its curious and hungry. too_pointer
Re: Bear Killed in Missouri That bear sounds like it could be a danger. We can only guess what went through the mind of the person who shot I'm not sure what I would do in his position. I know if something was after my dog, I would shoot, and ask questions later . Since the animal was chased off and returned, I back the owner !! too_
Guest INHunterman
Re: Bear Killed in Missouri Sounds like the guy did the right thing although he should've used a larger caliber gun, something that could've put the bear down quick and easy. Strut10
Re: Bear Killed in Missouri [ QUOTE ] Though it is illegal to kill black bears in Missouri, the man who shot the bear will not be charged because he was protecting his property, said Ken West, regional supervisor with the Missouri Department of Conservation in Cape Girardeau. [/ QUOTE ] Good thing the guy wasn't from PA. You have no right to defend your property from wild animals here. You WILL be arrested. You can't even defend yourself unless the animal is basically chewing on you [ QUOTE ] Uncharacteristically, the bear returned Sunday night. [/ QUOTE ] "uncharacteristically" my behind!! A black bear that has found an easy meal will return time after time.......lots of times later the same night you run him off. [ QUOTE ] "Normally, once you run a bear off, he doesn't come back," West said. [/ QUOTE ] .......right [ QUOTE ] The man used a .22-caliber rifle. [/ QUOTE ] I guess if that's what you've got........ Obviously the folks who do not agree with the killing of this bear don't have to deal with the rotten things on a daily basis. There's 2 sides to every black bear............there's the side that the biologists and game commission tell you about...........and then there's the truth. Guest MizzouHunter6
Re: Bear Killed in Missouri I knew we had a few of them here down south. Its kind of funny , because in all of our deer hunting and turkey hunting pamphlets for the new season, there is always a small entry with a picture that says "Report black bear sightings". I mean, if your going to shoot a bear , Id rather of seen him down in one nice shot than 3 rounds out of a .22. Just my two cents.
stevebeilgard
Re: Bear Killed in Missouri that bear was an attack waiting to happen. better off shot. if he were afraid of humans, as he should have been, he would never have come there in the first place. wtnhunt
Re: Bear Killed in Missouri Would have done the same thing. Cannot think of anyone who would sit and watch a bear come in to attack their dog.
Newarcher
Re: Bear Killed in Missouri The bear was hungry and wasn't scared of people...a dangerous combination. As for the .22, it may have been all he had at the time. I will never second guess a soldier who does what he or she has to in the heat of battle--even if the act itself is wrong and I will never second guess somone who defends themself or a pet/family member. buckee
Re: Bear Killed in Missouri The other thing I'd like to add is that tranquilizing bears and relocating them isn't a fail safe solution. Bears (black bears) have been known to travel hundreds, yes, hundreds of miles after being relocated, to get back to their home turf.
