Flintlock question.

Recommended Posts

Went to an auction today and bought kind of a neat little flintlock pistol. Its a Pedersoli, Harpers Ferry 1807 in .58 caliber.Im not real familiar with flintlocks and had a question. If Im shooting 777 powder do i have to buy regular black powder for the flashpan on it?Also anyone know where i can find some info on loads for a 58 cal. pistol?Im not sure exactly how much powder to use, one websight said 50 grains for that pistol but I wanted to double check if possible.I only gave 50$ for the gun, looked em up when i got home and they sell for around $360 new, couldnt pass it up for that price grin.gif

Re: Flintlock question.

You need to use 4F black powder in the pan. Be prepared for hang fires. I tried Pyrodex in my flint and it is interesting. Black powder is best. I would not recommend 777 in a flint gun. As to what loads, I have no idea. The 50 gr charge sounds mild. I would start with that and work up.

Re: Flintlock question.

Ive run into a small problem, I cant find any regular blackpowder.Everyones carrying Pyrodex,777, and something called American pioneer, but no blackpowder.I even drove all the way up to Cabelas only to be told that due to government restrictions they dont have any and cant get any in for 3 weeks because they need to be inspected first confused.gifconfused.gif

Re: Flintlock question.

Yeah, regular black powder is getting REALLY hard to find at local sporting good stores. I can still buy some at a store about an hour drive from my house, that's the closest one around for me. I stocked up a while back, still have 7 pounds left, need to buy even more. It seems with all of the modern propellants, many sporting goods stores have come to think of it as being obsolete.

Re: Flintlock question.

Had a .45 Flinter rifle a few years ago. I used FFF for the load and FFFF for the pan. A pistol should be easier to use than is the rifle. Something about that spark and flame up near your eyes.

You may want to start with 40 grains of FFF. It is not a practical weapon, you just as well be safe.

I shot a BP revolver one time. That was a trip. Those things like to jump across the cylinders and fire at once. Thankfully I had no trouble.

Good luck Horst!
