I tested mechanicals and don't like them

I usually use Muzzys, but I figured I'd try some mechanicals to see if they are to my liking.

I tried 100 grain Wasp Jackhammer SSTs.

I shot 7 times and 4 times only 2 blades opened, 2 times one blade opened and 1 time all three opened. I was shooting a relatively porous target, loosed material that usually allows the broadhead to reach the other side. The broadhead did go through the target with the fletchings of course still sticking out on the shooting side of the target. As I checked them I noticed that they weren't opening up.

I left the broadheads at the shooting range with a note saying that anyone could take them if they wanted. Are these usually bad mechanicals? I figured by the price and by some advertisements that they would be the best ones to try (that the store had).

I'm sticking with Muzzys, baby. All sharpened and ready to go.

Not sure about those specifically, and i am not a fan of mechanicals but it may be yorur target. They are meant to not pop open when you release the arrow, so it takes some force. The hide fo an animal provides teh resistance to open them. Try them on a more solid target and you will probably find they open reliably.

Re: I tested mechanicals and don\'t like them

Let me get this straight.

You shot them at a foam target that allows for the tips to pass threw but not the entire arrow? Thus stopping 1/2 way threw?

So when you looked behind the target you could see the entire broadhead-right?

This may be a surprize to you but they opened and then as the drag of friction slowed the arrow drastically which then the blades swung back forward towards a closed position. If the rubber band was gone or on the shaft somewhere, then they opened. All of them I am confident to say. No one blade has any more resistance to free swinging then the next...

Now foam can deposite a thin coat of "skin" from the target material, onto an arrow due to massive friction. Literally melting the target foam onto the shaft. This material will depostie on the blades and ferral as well, so when the blades were force forward and into the slots on the ferral, they may of appeared to be taunt in the broads ferral or body, making it look like they did not open.

Furthermore, the blades swing very freely, which not only causes, even jello consistancy material, to force them to open, but also they are designed to be able to be pulled back in reverse and have the blade swing closed.

Not only for your benifit of ease of arrow removal, but also for a deers ease of arrow removal on poor shots.

If the blade were to open and then stay "locked" open then they would be considered a barbed tip which are illegal in most states. Just ask Montec Teken buyers/users.

I think you just gave away perfectly good head for free...

Please call me the next time you test broad heads... PLEASE!!!! wink.gif

Re: I tested mechanicals and don\'t like them

I agree that I think everyone opened you just didnt know it. Next time take a 4 inch thick styrofoam target and place a peice of paper on the back side of it. After your shot the blades will be closed on your broadhead but inspect the paper and you will clearly see all the blades opened. Mechanicals really do work, its all in the head of some people.

Re: I tested mechanicals and don\'t like them

Not to sound like a puttz, But I really hope you know that most of the time the blades will close if the broadhead is slowing down rapidly after it passes thru the target. If one blade opens, espicially on broadheads that use an o-ring, then I am willing to bet they all did. Sounds to me like you gave away broadheads that more than likey worked great. Next time put a piece of paper behind the target and see it there are as many tears as there are blades. I have shot SpitFires,Jak-Hammers,Snypers, and Tekens thru targets and all of the blades opened every time.

Re: I tested mechanicals and don\'t like them

Its what ya feel comfortable with, i know they opened and i used mech's last year, killed a nice doe on a LONG shot went right threw her, but one thing that was always on my mind with them was that "what if". My muzzeys dont have that problem, they go in and come out blasting pretty much everyhting in there path.

Re: I tested mechanicals and don\'t like them

i have always shot Fixed head broadheads for deer hunting .. they were Muzzys or Thunderheads...

i have always used mechaniclas for turkey hunting...

but this year i had my eyes opened to the new G-5 Tekans ...i have 3 friends that have used them on Bear , Elk and deer and they have performed perfectly.. i might switch for next year because i want to extend my shooting range to 60 yds when i go antelope hunting ...even though my Muzzys fly great at that range in a windy situatiion they might not ...

Re: I tested mechanicals and don\'t like them

I just got some Spitfires and noticied the same thing after they shot (by the way - they shot great out to 30 yards - havn't shot 'em any further yet).

I thought maybe I had to loosen the blades on them with that little screwdriver thingy.

Someone please confirm - My Spitfires are ready for action right out of the box right??? (After test shooting each one, matching them up to the the arrow that provides the greatest accuracy, numbering them, AND resharpening them!)

Re: I tested mechanicals and don\'t like them

Glad to see this post ive only hunted seven years and mechanicals are the only thing i have used ever . i have only used rocket heads with the rubber band but this year changed to the grim reaper with no band . I have seen three dear killed with them and the hole is un real . I shot a doe saturday quartering away a little high but down and out the other shoulder . I cant complain about that but like i said mechanicals is all i know

Re: I tested mechanicals and don\'t like them

Stinger1,

I use the Wasp Jackhammer SSTs in a 125 grain. I have used them for the past 2 years. I have never had a problem with them not opening. On my deer last year the entrance wound was a nice 1 1/2 inches.

It's too bad you didn't like them. Maybe give them another shot.

Re: I tested mechanicals and don\'t like them

I went back to paper test them, but someone had taken them already with a big thank you note. LOL.

I bought some new muzzys and will be shooting them this year. Perhaps I will buy some more and paper test them. The explanations of why they didn't open seem quite reasonable.

It's just like me to do what I did. I'm an all or nothing type of person, but this year will be an all muzzy year.
