Got Me Before I Got It!

Well sorta...

We've been fighting with a critter under our house for the last two weeks. Set up a trap but didn't catch anything but barn cats. So last night, we heard the trap shut.

I peeped through my window and saw nothing this morning. Stupid me, let the dog out the back door right by the trap.

THE SKUNK that was caught in the trap was the smallest skunk I have ever seen. The reason I couldn't see it cause it was huddled in the corner(this is not a big trap at all).

The spade shovel that we used to coral it into the trap took the major hit(since it was in a small trap it couldn't stand and spray). It was basically a glob of stink that hit the shovel. The dog got a little bit on his flanks but that was it.

The poor dog couldn't understand why I was yealling at him to get in the house(before he could get more stinky). So I went inside, Jenn starts griping. She bathed the dog and I closed the windows.

Then took the fieldmaster and gave him 8 from a distance(what's the worst that could happen, he already sprayed).

So we got a confused dog, a stink something awful by the house, 8 less .22 bullets and probably a week of smelling this bugger.

Does anyone have any tips as to how to suppress the smell in the soil near the house?

I have never been that close to a spray before. The smell didn't even smell right. It was like the rotten onion in the bag, times 1000.

Terrible way to start the day. Thank gosh I don't stink today or I would have had to take the day off(office work).

I think the only way to get rid of the smell is wait it out. My brother-in-law had one let off under his trailer house. I was in the winter and we could not get that thing out. Had to shut the heater off cause of the smell was circulating in the house.

Re: Got Me Before I Got It!

I used to be a NYSDEC Nuisance Wildlife Control Officer. This is a recipe I used on my clothes and it works great!!!!!! http://www.ehow.com/how_3017_skunk-smell-pet.html

As for the soil. Dig up some of it and replace with clean soil. But in the end nothing works better than time.

If you ever have to do this again try this. Throw a tarp or old blanket over the trap and gently carry the trap to where you plan to release. Just DON'T shake him up too much or he may release a little bit. A skunk will not give a direct shot of spray unless it has something to aim at.

8 shots to kill a skunk? Holy cow.... grin.gif

Ha Ha. I've heard they have more than one shot of the stinky stuff. I was taking no chances man! ha ha ha.

gfour....man that would have been terrible. I definetly got off lucky as the dog barely caught any and the majority hit the dirt. I was standing right there when it all went down. Could have been worse!

Buckee-That's exactly what I was thinking. I have honestly never seen a skunk this small that had the ability to spray. The burrow was not very big. I hope it was the only one.

I was given a suggestion by a guy from work to use pool bleach(powdered) on the soil and then leach it in with the hose. Its just soil anyways, so I don't mind if it kills the weeds.

Re: Got Me Before I Got It!

Well a few years back my cat got sprayed, vet recommened vinegar. Then a year or two later our one dog got sprayed right in the face/nose. We think she tried to sniff its butt, lol. It'll go away over time but you have the rotten onions times 10 right, because there are some onions rotting in our root cellar right now!
