Squirrelhunter91
Well, last deer season on a farm that is made up of rolling hills and areas that get alot of sun, there were 2 does bedded down on a sunny ridge at 6 AM. We drove up to them on the quad and got within 50 yards. They just sat there, sunning themselves and not caring. We then drove away from them and later came back at about 5 PM. They did not even move! Same spot. 9 hours later.
Swamphunter
Re: Weird things while hunting A few years back I was taking my brother in-law hunting with me and it was a windy day. His father was a bit concerned about trees falling in the woods and landing on him (not worried about me of course) . I assured him that in the 20 or so years of hunting I had never heard a tree fall in the woods. We had been sitting for about an hour and the wind had actually died down to the point it was almost non existant when I heard this noise that sounded like someone whacking a stick against a tree...I then heard the unmistakeable creaking and cracking of a tree and then a thunderous boom of what was an obviously huge tree that had fallen over the ridge from where I was. I sat there and smirked thinking "whats the chances".

lil hunter
Re: Weird things while hunting well, one day 2 seasons ago, i was sittin up in my treestand looking over a field, and i saw a big buck about 100 yards away. His rack was all messed up. Going straight up, and then paddled out at the top. Looked kinda like a small cariboue. Then I realized how light colored his skin was. He walked around for a few minutes, then went back into the woods, then came back out again. I still couldn't figure out what it was. When i got outta my stand I went down by where he was walkin, and there he is, about 15 yards into the woods, just watchin me. I got a little closer, not knowing what would happen. Then went back to the truck. About a half hour later, my dad got to the truck and immediately asked me if i saw him. Apperently, at o dark thirty that morning, when my dad was walkin to his stand, that deer was standin right in front of him, and not moving. We went back to hunt again that afternoon, and i got within 5-10 yards, and took probably 30 pictures of him. But there wasn't a single picture that you can actually see him in?? I'm still confused about that. I came home that night, and did a lotta lookin around the internet. The closest thing i could find was a fallow deer, but i'm still not sure if thats what he was. A few days later, he was spotted with another one of his kind, and he got shot. I thought it was kinda cheap, because this deer had to be tame.(he let me within 5 yards of him, and didn't even spook) Thats the weirdest story i got for ya. wtnhunt
Re: Weird things while hunting Have heard a lot of weird sounds and some pretty weird cries in the woods in the dark. Last year after shooting a doe in the afternoon with my bow, I heard some coyotes yipping and howling right after I got down from the stand. Did not find that deer that afternoon, the next day when I found her the coyotes had beat me to her.
Guest BCBOY
Re: Weird things while hunting Don't take this the wrong way fg, but I'd suggest putting the SKS down, get yourself a real deer rifle (odd 6, 7mm, 243, what have ya) and Go To The Range And Practice Your Shooting. One Shot One Kill is The GOAL
craig mack
Re: Weird things while hunting I wasnt actually hunting when I seen this but I was on a hunting trip. We heard about this place in Paulding Michigan (western U.P.) where there is this mysterious light. So we went to check it out and sure enough we seen it. It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen. At first it was a red light about 1 mile away at the top of this hill and then it started moving back and forth and then it came down the hill toward us until it got about 200 hundred yards away and it turned into a bright white light, Just beaming bright, it got to about 50 yards away and then it turned red again and went away. It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen. I guess they talked about it on unsolved mysteries before and its on the internet. If you are ever up there check it out. wtnhunt
Re: Weird things while hunting [ QUOTE ] I was hunting with a SKS that holds 11 rounds(which is very legal) [/ QUOTE ] That is pretty crazy. Semi autos are legal here, but I am pretty certain that you cannot have but three in the mag. An sks is a decent deer rifle. I killed my first deer with one. Cleanest kill I have ever had. I hear people during deer season all the time shooting multiple shots and hear a lot of stories about them losing deer hunting back behind our property. Seems there are many people out there who do not realize that some states do in fact have laws that state how many rounds you are legally allowed to have in your rifle. In my honest opinion there are too many unskilled shooters who take to the woods who really should not be out there. Being new to hunting is no excuse for lacking proficiency with your weapon or ignorance to local game laws. Spraying bullets at a moving target in my opinion is not safe nor does it shed a positive light on hunters, but there is no doubt many out there who partake in this type of activity. Be sure of your target and make that first shot count.
TreeWalker
Re: Weird things while hunting A couple years back while hunting over an alfalfa field, I didn't witness a coyote kill, but heard every aspect of it........ The field was full of deer, and I had my eyes set on a nice 4x4, hoping he'd come into bow range........all of the sudden a couple hundred yards behind me in the woods, coyotes startied yippin and barking......then you could hear the unmistakeable bleat of a fawn.......yip...bark...bleat....bleat...bark..........for what seemd 15-20 seconds...................as this was going on, all of the deer in the field ran to that field edge as if to see what was goin on................then it grew deathly quite...literally.......the coyotes had made their kill...........after a short pause, the deer began feeding again, and the evening went on as if nothing happened........circle of life..... Turkeygirl
Re: Weird things while hunting Just this last shotgun deer season is probably the weirdest thing that happened to me. Ok, so you get the picture, our neighbors like to get a bunch of their friends togetehr and run through the woods, chasing the deer and shooting at them, running. Anyway they are jerks but each year our horse fence will get knocked down by deer when the neighbors chase them and the deer run across some fields and the road into our woods. Well this day I decided to hunt in the stand in our small patch of woods incase any deer got chased this way. I sat until I was cold then just as I had climbed down, I heard BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM from across the road so I climb back up. I soon see some deer running through a field on the other side of the road and they turn to come across the road, still way out of shooting range. Well as I watch them near the road, a black, shiny car is coming up the road fast. I swear I don't know how this happened but I saw the deer run across the road, the car went past the deer and I hear a big THUMP and see a deer leap in the air! The car kept going like it never it a thing and I saw the deer run into some woods (not ours) across from me. I call to the house on the radio, tell Andy that some deer ran through and he comes over to see if they stopped and he could chase them towards me. Well nothing came out, they must have snuck out somewhere. When I climb down, Andy tells me "There is a really big doe lying dead over there, no gun wound" and I say " I knew it, a deer really did get hit by the car that went through!" So we filled a doe tag with a HUGE doe and only lost a little meat where what must have been the corner of the car hit her which was right behind the shoulder. She had broken ribs and her was completely blown out from the force. Amazing and I believe it was one of God's blessings. It also shows that not all deer hit by vehicles are a total waste and also how far a deer can go when hit be a car before dying. This deer died about 100 yards from the road. Rhino
Re: Weird things while hunting We don't have that many coyotes down here but several years ago I was bowhunting out of a ground blind inside the edge of a briar thicket. Two fawns were about 60 yards away when a coyote came in. One of the fawns ran off but the other decided to try to bluff the coyote with a face to face confrontation. In no time the coyote grabbed the fawn by the throat. I couldn't stand watching that so I tried to shoot the coyote but shot over him at that distance. It startled him enough to turn the fawn loose and run off. Unfortunately, he came right back and put a death grip on the fawn's throat again. I tried to shoot him again but shot right under him. This time he was quite a bit more spooked than the first time so he turned the fawn loose and ran off again. The fawn got back on its feet and started walking toward me, stumbling and falling once before she entered the briar thicket and bedded down out of site but within 15 yards or so of me. About 5 minutes passed when loud thrashing made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. That dang coyote came through the thicket to get that fawn again. I couldn't do hardly anything while they were in the thicket. I did finally scare off the coyote (for a little while) but I'm sure he had already killed the fawn. He came back right before dark to get the fawn so I slipped out of there. A pretty sickening experience.
JoshM
Re: Weird things while hunting 3 Season ago Me and my mom b/f were walking in a corn field when out of no where a small buck jumps out. Well me and my moms b/f were just standing there looking at it when all of a sudden it charged us. We got out of the way but the deer just kept running straight. We still havent found out what was wrong with the deer. This is a very long story so i tried to keep it short
JimT
Re: Weird things while hunting About ten years ago or so I was in my stand when a doe appeared out of no where. She was about 40 yards behind me. I stood up slowly and looked back. Still there. I could here her walking. I look back again and she was about 20 yards out coming at me still. When it seemed she was right behind me I drew my bow back and waited for her to come up beside me and offer a shot. It never happened. That deer just up and vanished. To this day I do not know what happened. I never saw or heard that deer take off. It was dead quiet and the ground was very noisy. Freaks me out to this day...... lil hunter
Re: Weird things while hunting [ QUOTE ] The weirdest one I have heard is very hard to believe but my grand father would not lie about this. In his younger days my grand father hunted with one of the local priests. Opening day of gun season fell on the first of November, which if you are Catholic you may know it is All Saints Day. The priest insisted that before they go hunting they say some prayers. SOme how my grandpa convinsed him that they should just go hunting and worry about prayers later. AS they were hunting a truly massive buck walked out calmly and stood. My grandfather fired at him and the buck turned and his eyes started to glow red and he snorted fire. IN shock he didn't fire anymore and the buck walked off. Needless to say they then said there prayers. Also I have heard a similar story from other people who said a Doe and fawn ran out on a Nov. 1 with glowing red eyes. They guy unloaded his gun on them and didn't cut a hair. The scary part was that after he shot he went to look for blood and there was no sign of tracks in the fresh snow. Believe it or not, I don't care, but I believe it. [/ QUOTE ] Now thats just freaky. David_218
Re: Weird things while hunting [ QUOTE ] Just wondering if anyone has any creapy stories they have incountered while hunting. [/ QUOTE ] I once shot a Rabbit, behind my home, many years ago. I remember picking up the Rabbit and there was no blood from the shot, but the Rabbit had a funny stare out of its eyes. I placed the Rabbit in my Game Bag and went back to the house. Laid the Rabbit on some newspaper and went in to get a knife and water to clean it. When I got back to where I laid the Rabbit, it was GONE! I looked all around but never saw him again. I just assumed that I just stunned him and he excaped uninjured! Never had this happen, but this one time!
ThethirdI
Re: Weird things while hunting I have a couple of wierd things but this is the strangest. I was sitting in my stand for about 3 or 4 hours when I saw another hunter about 75 to 100 yards away on the other side of the field I was overlooking. He was heading toward the parking area on the public land I was on. I saw what I thought was probably his hunting partner about 20 yards behind. It was a little hazy so I just saw the figure moving in the haze. The hunter would walk and stop and then walk again. The same went for the second figure I saw. I got out my binoculars to see what they were doing. The first figure was a hunter just like I thought but the second was a deer that was shadowing his every move. The deer would walk when he walked and stop when he stopped and the hunter never knew the deer was there. The hunter was walking with a loaded crossbow and never knew. That's wierd and funny. I have never seen that again but thought you guys would get a kick out of it. I saw the hunter later on but never told him what I saw.
