Guest BCBOY
It's the off season and I'm bored, but I am dreaming about Sept. Just curious what are your realistic expectations for this upcoming season? I have a good chance at drawing a Bull Moose tag for a real good area. Thinking of actually holding out for a bigger bull instead of dropping the first one just to fill the freezer. A 45 inch+ inch bull is realistic and I know there is one monster in the area that I would love to drop that was pushing that 60 inch mark last year. Also got a great chance at drawing a mountian goat tag. Have been drawn several times in the past but have never given it much effort to even hunt them. If I'm drawn this year I plan to focus on actually killing a decent billy. Saw a real dandy a couple weeks ago. I hope he stays on that cliff all summer and doesn't hide out in the glaciers. He's very doable where he's at right now. As far as deer are concerned, I'm really going to hold out for a whopper muley. A 200+ incher isn't unrealistic, I just have to toe the line and hold off pulling the trigger on the real nice 170-180 class bucks. I'm vowing to live by the words, "Go Big or Go Home!!!!" buckee
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? Well, I'm putting in for moose around 100 mile house, with 2 friends of mine and I'm putting in for a bow elk on the island here. Other than that, I'll be trying to scout out a good mature blacktail buck. The bigger, the better
fisherguy
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? For me it starts with archery bear in August, I have a good shot at a nice bear, i won't shoot under a 6 footer, and i have a good shot at one pushing 7. Archery moose my dad will have a bull tag and whichever one of us gets a shot at a legal bull will down it. Too much going on in the fall, and gotta fill the tag in three weeks before the rifle season opens to be picky. As far as chances i would say its 75% that the tag will be filled by one of us. Size could be anything, two years ago he got a 53" bull with his bow, the year before that his buddy took a yearling forkhorn. For deer i am going to go for a doe with my bow, and if a buck above 130 comes in range he is mine. Because our archery deer season is during rifle moose season i will probably not hunt that much. Then for rifle deer if i still have my buck tag it will be a minimum of 140 which is realistic, and if i took one with a bow it will have to go 160. (party hunting is legal, we have a few guys who are purely meat hunters and don't care if they fill their tag, or someone else does so if you fill your buck tag you can only shoot another if it is over 160. That way you can keep hunting and not have to pass on a good deer, and everyone still usually fills thier own tag). Oh, and this all assumes i am working at a part-time job while in the application process for my career of choice. If i get hired on quickly everything but bear and moose will likely be a total loss...for the 5th straight year.
superguide
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? Same as every year a boonie whitey and a good muley with a bow.Won't get drawn for rifle mulie for a few more years. If I can get within 50 inches of Saskman's deer I'm pretty happy lol. wtnhunt
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? Pretty much the same as always. Looking for 3.5 year old or better whitetails. Biggest goal of the year will be to help my oldest daughter, 9 years old, to get her first deer(whitetail). Next would be to kill one with the bow and find it before the coyotes get to it. JimT
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? I am hooping for a descent bear with my muzzleloader right now. Thats about it. They draw for moose here in a couple weeks, but I have never been drawn. If I do get drawn I will have a pretty good chance at the Maine slam. Thats a deer, turkey, moose and bear in the same year. Unlikely though. Come spetember I am going to shoot the first deer I can. Last year I held out for a good buck and ended up with nothing. This year the first adult deer I can shoot is in the freezer. I am going to hunt for a good buck every other year. I am not starving and enjoy my time in the woods more than anything, so holding out does not bother me in the least. But in the meantime I have some 3D and fishing to do...
horst
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? Im hoping to get my 10 yr old his first buck with a muzzleloader, anything with antlers will do just fine. Then Im hoping to find and kill a 130 or better whitetail from ground level with my bow.Late Muzzleloader Im hoping try getting close enough to a big doe to take her with a flintlock pistol again Id like to do this from ground level at under 20 yrds. And Ive been training a new yellow lab puppy since early this spring, Im hoping to have a lotta time to chase pheasants and see how she does on them. I love watching a dog work birds. And for my late muzzleloader either sex tag Im just planning on hunting hard and seeing what happens, all else fails Ill take another doe for the freezer during the last couple days of season. Guest BCBOY
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? I love the goals with the kids. My son is just about old enough. One more year and he'll be able to take his Hunter Training and hunt with his old man. We were talking about it a couple weeks ago and he said, "Maybe I'll even shoot a Booner!" I also plan to hunt behind the hounds again this winter. Chasing lions is an awesome experience. Would like to turn out on a lynx or 2 as well. VermontHunter
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? Actually BCBOY the best thing I could hope for, is in the upcoming archery season I would love to see my new hunting buddy VTBowman whack his first ever Long Bow deer.... ,,that right there would tickle me pink,,just the thought of taking a animal the old fashion way.. and for everyone to have a sucessful and safe hunting season.... TreeWalker
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? Well..I know what tags I am putting in for....and I have a couple of the animals scouted already, and am watching their progress as they grow their velvety appendages......... I got turned down for ND and MT big game, so I am hoping for my normal rifle tags for Antelope and Whitetail.....and maybe scab into a Muzzleloader tag to go along with my two archery tags....... Doc
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? Vermonthunter- Actually I think that would be great. I always get a kick out of those that bring back the traditions of early archery. I would try to do it myself too if I could still pull back my old longbow. I'm not sure it would still hold together, and I'm pretty sure that my old muscles wouldn't either. At any rate, I would be real happy for anyone who has forsaken all the modern technological crapola and did it the hard way. I too wish him all the luck in a new old adventure. Rhino
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? Well I'm hoping to draw an Iowa bow tag this year. I have a pretty good chance of drawing a tag there and virtually no chance for Kansas this year. If I do draw a bow tag for Iowa, I hope to put it on a mature buck that's 150 class or better. Here at home I'm just hoping to take a mature buck that's 4 year olds or older with any weapon. Doing it with a bow down here would be a bonus. We don't get the big racked mature bucks down here like some other areas of the country. Other than that I'll try to take 2 or 3 does during bow season as part of our management plan. I also have a couple of very close friends down here that didn't have that great of a season last year. I hope they both get a big mature buck this year. They both did their homework last year putting in a lot of preseason preparation but didn't put a big one down. They both saw a few. One missed a nice one with his bow and the other didn't get a shot opportunity on a mature buck. They both deserve to hang a big one on the wall this year. Other than that, I'm hoping my son will come spend some time hunting with me this fall. This will be his 1st year in college so I'm not sure how much I'll get to see him anymore. Getting him to bag a nice buck would be great too but at this point I'm hoping just to spend some time in the woods with him on a 1 on 1 basis. too_pointer
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? I'm hoping my health hangs in there so I can spend much more time in the woods. Any mature deer would make me very happy too_
SaskMan
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? [ QUOTE ] If I can get within 50 inches of Saskman's deer I'm pretty happy lol. [/ QUOTE ] That may be easy Cpry. I plan on only pulling the pin on a typical that'll gross at least 170, a massive buck with a tonne of character regardless of score, or a a beast. Of course I'll take a monster 4x4 if it is in the 160's. If I fail to find one like that, I'll gladly take a doe. I may also put in for Mulies just so I can put BCBOY's hypothesis on whitetails and Mulies to the test.
Chrud
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? I'd like to get my first buck. I'll shoot a good 6-pointer for my first buck, but then I'll get more picky.

tedicast
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? My realistic goals for the 2005-2006 deer season..... To take a deer with the bow, shotgun, and muzzleloader. And for at least one of them to be a bigger buck than last years. A ml'er, and archery deer will be my first with those weapons. VTbowman
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? Big ole doe at 15 yards with my long bow is what I want. Buck would be nice too but not neccesary.

Saskbuck40
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? Whitetail 170+ is realistic. Mulie 180+, but probably wont get drawn this year. Antelope, just lookin for a good time chasin down some speed goats.
Tominator
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? Based on what I've seen in Knox county in the last 2 years, and what I missed in Knox county last year, I'm realistically hoping for a 125 to 140 class deer this coming year. This year I'm hoping to actually connect on the shot too.
Tsmola
Re: So What Are You Realistically Hoping For? hopefully to bag my first with a bow. And of course I'm hoping for something bigger than my personal best 140 4/8 buck. We also have a piebald in our hunting area now, if I get a chance I might pop him.
