my arrow building

how many of you build your own arrows ? i do to a certain point.. i get my shop to fletch them up . but after that i do everything else..

the purpose to build my own arrows is to make sure they all weigh the same and are compliant with IBO regulations ...heres the problem i went through doing my last set of Goldtip 22 series Ultralights....

they were full length when i got them . on a pointer from a Goldtip rep i cut 1 inch off of the nock end first.. then i had them fletched with 3 inch 3D dura vanes...

heres where it got tough . to get them down to the weight i wanted whcih was 315... so that i could shoot them at 63 lbs to be within the 5 grains per pound for IBO...

so i weighed them all before cutting with the new fletchings on.. what igot was complete shock.. out of 12 arrows only 6 weighed in at the same weight ! the highest and lowest had a 14 grain differance..

so i figured that if i started cutting them to the length i wanted to achieve my weight i better go slow.. so cutting an inch off at a time and then weighing them they started to get closer and closer..

however i still had one that was heavy as heck and another that was the exact opposite...

by slowly going to 27.25 inch raw shaft length i came up with 8 arrows that weighed in right at 313 grains with 80 grain tips and 12.4 pin nock bushings and 4 grain pin nocks ...this was ok but i was at a loss about what to do with the other 4 to get them to weight he same..

so heres where my shop owner came in and said to trim a little off of the points to get them to weigh in at 313 for the heaviest 2 arrows .. easy to do i just trimmed a little off and wala perfect weighing arrows..

as for the 2 that wrere light he told me to add hot melt glue to the inside of the glue in points.. once they were heavy enough to make up for the light weigh arrows then glue them in.. wala 2 more perfect arrows..

now i have 12 , no make that 11 arrows that weigh perfect.. the reason i dont have 12 is that i smacked on of the pin nocks off the first night shooting them grin.gif.. im waiting for a new pin nock bushings and pin nocks to arrive...

it sure was a pain to get these arrows to all weigh the same , but its sure worth it when you see them fly... i will post some pics of them here in a little bit...

so what did i learn.. to build precision arrows you must have a digital grain scale.. weigh everything , nocks , , fletchings , points , bushings and raw shafts... match up the components that will make them all weigh the same when you are done.... take your time and do it right in the long run you will be happy with what you have...

Re: my arrow building

Tony, could the weight difference have been a combination of the fletchings(probably not tested for weight tolerances) and the 1 inch you took of the nock end??

I assume the 22's have the same weight tolerances as the Pro Hunters. Did you weight the bare shafts before cutting??

I'm in the process of purchasing some arrows for 3-D that I can do what you've done: Build to my own specs. I can't decide between the Goldtip 22's, 30X, and the Pro Hunters.

Also, how much did your grain scale run you?

Re: my arrow building

nope kevin.. the fletching were all the same weight and the inch i took of the nock end was recomended by a Goldtip rep..

as for the raw shaft weights i didnt weigh them.. however Goldtip says they should have been within 2 grains tolerance for that dozen...

where the differance came was in the wall thickness.. the heavy ones just had a slightly thicker wall.. it didnt seem to matter though .. the all weigh the same now and they fly great.. i would have liked to have gotten Pros but it seems that the Goldtip 22 series Pros are out of stock at Goldtip.. and i didnt want to spend the normal price elsewhere for them...

go to Goldtips website and build you arrows for each of them .. see what you get for length and FOC and wirhg that will perform the best for your bow .... plus its fun ! grin.gif

Re: my arrow building

fqpatton.... yes you can shoot 3 inch vanes if your shooting the open class... the only class that you have to shoot 4 inch fletch is the Hunter Class.. i shot that last year and this year i jumped to classes to Open.. wink.gif

Gator... a Goldtip rep told me that if i cut off 1 inch from the nock end i can get my arrows to be a little straighter .. from what i understand.. so my Goldtip 22 series Ultralights were .005 he said if i cut 1 inch off the nock end it could improve the overall starightness. like to almost .003....

so i tried it and im amazed at how accurate these .005 arrows are.. they actually shoot just as many Xs for indoors as my Easton 2613 indoor arrows that are.001....
