Bratwurst and Onions in Beer

Recommended Posts

After watching the Johnsonville Brats commercials every week during the Cup races, I decided I had to try them. You know....the comercial that starts with " Any recipe that starts with open 3 beers...." grin.gif

Well I went to the Johnsonville website and tracked down the recipe. all I can say is WOW!!!!

Just got through eating. Blows hotdogs, and Hamburgs away. Here is the recipe from the Johnsonville website:

Ingredients

1 pkg (19.76 oz.) Johnsonville Fresh Original Bratwurst

2 large onions, sliced thinly

3 bottles (12 oz.) beer (whatever is handy)

2 tbsp. olive oil

1 tsp. caraway seeds

1 pkg. buns or rolls

Mustard to taste

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Directions

Place the brats, onions, caraway seeds and beer in a pan and heat to boiling. Cover, turn down heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove the brats to a covered plate.

Strain the onions into a collander. Turn drained onions into a pan with a little olive oil and slowly cook until well carmelized (about 20 minutes).

Grill brats on low to medium heat for 10 minutes, turning the brats so they are browned on all sides.

Serve on your favorite bun. Spread a little mustard and smother brat with the cooked onions.

Try it.....they came out awesome. I didn't have the caraway seeds, and made it without them. Will try it with the seeds next time.

Re: Bratwurst and Onions in Beer

clayman, I'm with you....toss the onions, pile on the sauerkraut.

As far as types of brats go, Johnsonvilles are good, but the very best have to be Usinger's. Those are the filet mignon of the bratwurst world.

A variation I recently tried was after boiling to let them soak in beer overnight after boiling...they turned out AWESOME. Another good tip is to poke holes in the brats before boiling so it really takes up the flavor. Also, darker beers--like a good brown ale make the best brats--albeit at a higher price...lol Lastly, I love spicy mustard on brats--like Jack Daniel's mustard...that makes some rockin' brats.

If you can't or don't grill for any reason, another good way is after boiling to put them in a crock pot with a bunch of kraut and onions. Let them cook all day. When ready to eat, just throw 'em on the frying pan for a couple minutes to get the nice brown/black stripe on the side.

huntin girl, have you ever tried a beer brat? It doesn't taste like beer at all--it gives brats a completely unique flavor. If you like brats not made in beer, you'll love them made in beer.

So, what makes me a bratwurst expert? I live in Milwaukee...making brats is like a religion here...lol

What if you don't like the taste of beer? Is there an alternative? Sounds really good though.

I honestly didn't think they tasted like beer. My parents are coming over and I'm making them for them on friday night. That will be the test, as neither of them drink, but they want to try it.

Went to the store last night to pick some of these "brats" but there weren't any. Would they be called something different down south??? They had tons of keilbasa and polish sausage??

Sure that is good, but you are doing a couple things wrong bud. First, don't use Johnsonville Brats. Go to a meat market and get real ones. grin.gif 2nd, that recipie is weak. I'd tell you mine, but I might have to kill ya. grin.gifwink.gif I'd maybe send it to ya in a PM, but you'd have to swear that another sole won't be told. grin.gifblush.gifgrin.gif Unless of course you don't like spicy foods. wink.gif

My hunting buddy and I are planning to make some brats in the near future. The store has pork loin on sale so we are stocking up. Cooked in beer then browned on the grill is classic brat cookin.

Yep, I love them. Get mine made at Hickory Nutz in Medford, Wi. Awesome.

The rest of the family will only eat Johnsonville. I made them Saturday night! Gotta have the kraut, too grin.gif

Huntin Girl, if you buy brats, just buy to original Johnsonville...not the beer or cheese ones.

Re: Bratwurst and Onions in Beer

Boilling them in beer is the only way to do it.

I just had some venison ones boiled in beer the other day. Great eats!

I DO NOT recommend doing what a friend of mine did on a dare. We cooked the brats in beer. He took some of the beer and poured it into a cup, set it in the fridge, and yes ... drank it when it had cooled. Now to make this even more disgusting, since the brats were a pork product, some of the remaining grease had floated to the top of the cup of beer and turned to a gel like consistancy as it cooled. Yes, he drank that too. Needless to say, he did not keep it down for very long.

Kids ... throw the brat beer out after cooking the brats!

Ok...I tried this last night. First time I've ever had bratwurst. I must say, it smelled pretty good while cooking. However...it just wasn't spicy enough for me. I am going to try the "hot" version this weekend while we are trapped at home riding out this stupid tropical storm Arlene.

I boiled them in the beer and onions then put them on the grill. Just not spicy enough. Think I'll try polish sausage too. Now I'm hungry...time to go to lunch!!!!!!!!

huntin_girl...Last time I made them, I added 2 heaping tablespoons of minced garlic, chili powder, and crushed red pepper to the mix as they were simmering. Definately added a little spice to them.

Re: Bratwurst and Onions in Beer

I don't like the taste of beer but occasionally, when I'm cooking out, I'll put one of those disposable aluminum pans (maybe 9x4x4 deep) on the top rack with some cut up onions and green peppers and pour in a can of beer. After I grill the sausages, I'll put them in the beer hottub while I finish grilling everything else. Keeps them hot and juicy! tongue.gif

Man! tongue.giftongue.giftongue.gif I think I need to go pick up some grillin' meat! Gettin' hungry... grin.gif
