Guest TBryan
I started my season in Georgia this year. On Monday morning after opening day i got one. I started the day with my brother doing some blind calling since it was cold and windy and they didnt gobble at all. Nothing came in so we went back to camp grabbed some food and hopped back on the four wheeler to check out the other end of the property we were on. We decided to walk down a ridge into a creek bottom calling every 150 yards or so. After getting to the bottom and not hearing or seeing anything we decided to head back along the bottom of the ridge to see if maybe we could jump a bird. Then go up the side once we got to the four wheeler. I called and then we started back. About 3 or 4 minutes later i heard a gobble and stopped to ask my brother if he heard it. He said yes so i yelped back and he gobbled about 150 yards away. We then went down through some planted pines and set up in a little open area. We sat down and i called again and gobbled right back about 75 yards away. my brother was off to my left and a little bit forward because he was gonna be the shooter and we expected him to come in that way. We were sitting there waiting and about 2 mins after the last gobble i saw two turkeys moving to my right throu some brush about 60 yards away. They went behind a little knoll so turned to face them when the came over it. We waited for a couple of minutes and we still didnt see them so i cupped my hand to me mouth and yelped into it to sound like the hen they were looking for was leaving. As soon as i did that he gobbled about 30 yards away, but still behind the knoll. About half a minute later i saw ones tail fan pop up over the knoll then i see a turkey looking right at me. He did the head bob thing like he was about to take off then pop right back into strut. He started to move to my left back down behind the knoll. Thats when i shot him. I was waiting for my brother to shoot but he didnt because it was behind a tree. I decided to shoot because i didnt want him to get away. 18 lbs 3/4 in spurs 9 in beard After a lot of close calls and a missed shot I finally got one here in Texas. The last day i hunted turkey this year was 5/5/05 Good Omen maybe I started out fishing and caught a couple small bass then my brother and i headed out to a place on some public land right down the road. We sat down and called for about half an hour and didnt get any response. We then moved about 200 yards or so down the tree line that borders a field. We sat down about 20 yards apart and i started cutting and i thought i heard a gobble but i wasnt sure so i thought it was nothing. About five minutes later i cut again and i heard gobble and so did my brother. I yelped back and we heard two different birds. So i told him to come sit down next to me so we could try to double up. I called and they gobbled back. Next thing i see is two birds at the opposite side of the field cross under the fence. i started clucking and purring and a bird that was behind them quadruple gobbled at it! They started thier way down towards us and were about 100 yards away when i see the bird making all of the racket come out behind the fence. The two birds that came out first made thier way into the dry brushy creek bed about 75 yards away from us. I could see thier heads everyonce and a while so i figured were they would pop out. They got to the edge of the brush about 50 yards away and the first one strutted a bit. They worked thier way up about thirty yards away but they never gave us a shot a getting both of them. Since we didnt have a deke they last bird started getting nervous and turned around and started back. The first one stuck his head up one last time and i blasted him at about 35 yards. He's 20 pounds has 1 1/4 inch hooks, and a 9 3/4 inch beard!!!
