WHY!!!

Ok....so you all know the story about me losing my job at the fire department and now I work at a large hospital here in Memphis in the ER...

Well today at work this mom comes running in the ER with her 5 year old son saying he has been shot. Well I get a call beings I am the only paramedic there today to come to the waiting room stat. I get there and here is this 5 year old little boy with blood in his hair above his ear. He is talking and appears to be in no distress, so I start asking questions....

Seems that the little boy and his cousins were at grandads house and grandad had to go to the doctor so the oldest cousin(16) was left in charge. Well the other cousin that was 7 started playing with the guns in the house and "accidently" shot the 5 year old with a 12 ga shotgun. I was furious. Well we have to report anything like this to the police.

So I ask mom for the address where this happens and she gets all ticked off and says that she doesn't want it reported that it was an accident that the gun had a trigger lock on it and wasn't loaded. Man let me just say I blew a fuse.

Number 1 if it wasn't loaded why is her son sitting in my ER.

Number 2 more people die a year from an "unloaded" gun that anyother.

Number 3 why was a bunch of kids where the could get to the guns.

Number 4 I ask her did she realize just how close her kid was to not coming home today..

She still remained on the defensive.

In the end the kid was fine. Seems he got a graze from a pellet. Thank God. All I can say is God was watching over him today.

Sorry guys just had to vent a little. Hope you don't mind!

Re: WHY!!!

What idiots! mad.gif

As soon as my wife and I found out we were expecting, I went and bought a gun safe...you know all in the name of safety and all that! wink.gif. I am bound and determined that I am not ever going to have a gun safety issue with my son or daughter.

I can't imagine losing a child and then having to face the fact on top of it that you were responsible because you were too much of an idiot to put up a gun. I wouldn't let a rattlesnake loose in the house with my kids....why would anyone leave a loaded gun in the house?

The only gun that is in my house but not in the safe is my Glock. I carry it in my truck with me and bring it in for home defense each night. I separate the gun and the clip and never let the kids play in the room I keep it in. Now that my son is old enough to push a chair up to the place I keep it and can reach, I need to find a new place to put it.

Glad the tyke is okay, that is a load of burdon no 7 year old wants to bear....having killed a cousin.

Re: WHY!!!

Ranger....yea the incident got reported....we still called PD even though she was so hesitate with the info. Was the two officers got there and went in the room she started talking. She was just terrified of loosing her child to the state. Think she should have been more worried about losing the child to the gun!

My father kept a pistol in his bedroom for protection as well. He did not lock it up but his solution was that we were never allowed in his room. No exceptions. He also took us kids shooting enough that we werent as curious to look for them on our own(might lose our privlege to got shooting with him if we ever did).

however I do agree with keeping guns locked up. I don't have a safe as I cant afford one...but my guns and reloading equipment are all in a small room with a locked door that only me and my wife can enter.

As a sugesstion for your pistol you may want to look into one of those pistol safes you can stick anywhere and open based on thumb print. they are a bit pricey but much faster than a combo or key lock if you ever actualy need a defense gun. And what price can you put on safety.

Re: WHY!!!

Wow, that is sad, it really is. I'm glad the kid is ok but talk about alot of stress put on you! I hear of these stories on the news about kids being shot and/or killed because someone was playing with a supposedly "unloaded gun". Parents need to realize it is their own fault the kid gets shot because they didn't check the gun nor lock it up properly...

Re: WHY!!!

OK so I am at work today and we are talking about the whole incident that happened. Someone ask if we heard about he kid that got killed this weekend. From what they said some kid in they thought Tennessee was with his family while they were out shooting targets and walked behind the paper targets. They said the kid had camo pants on and no one saw him. One of the shooters, which to my understanding was family, shot him in the head killing him while he was walking behind the paper target.

When will these people learn. Just blows me away!
