Guest Andrea
I just found out that a bowfin is what we folks down in Florida call a mudfish or blackfish. Never heard it called a bowfin before. Well, I caught 2 this past weekend. The biggest was about 14 pounds. We "dispose" of these guys when we catch them. Apparently they are too bloody or boney to eat. Do any of you guys eat them??? They sure are fun to catch. Put up a great fight. Almost a shame to get rid of them afterwards. Had I known that there's a state record here of only 19 pounds, I would have kept fishing for them exclusively.

Guest Andrea
Re: Bowfin anyone? What's wrong with eating gar??? As long as it's the young ones and you cut them and cook them like jackfish, they are GOOD!!!!!! Don't knock it til you try it.
RangerClay
Re: Bowfin anyone? We have them up here in NY too. I usually toss them back. However if you want to see something REAL neat. Try leaving it out for the bugs to eat and the sun to bleach the bones. Bowfins are very prehistoric and have a skeleton unlike other fish that is really cool. Their skull is a series of plates and not one solid piece like other fish. It makes a great conversation piece. We take one to our youth fishing camp every year. As for eating them....no..have a moonpie Ranger

VABuckSlayer
Re: Bowfin anyone? We catch them here in VA too. We call them Grinnel here. (don't know why) They can sure eat a lot of fish. I throw them out of some of the ponds I fish. Some have too many big ones. Biggest I've caught was 10 lbs. Fun to catch though for sure however they can sure mess up some tackle. Catch one on a spinnerbait and you can throw that bait away! Eric
