VermontHunter
I knew it would be just a matter of time before the lock-out,,FALLOUT would begin !! IMO in the end the only ones they hurt is themselves and justly so IMO, we has fans pay top dallor to watch a sport and all the owners and players want is more, and forget or just plain don't care where the DALLOR ultimately comes from.... This is definately going to hurt the NHL and I see it as just a starting point now that the BIG BOY has spoken..... May 28, 2005, 6:25 PM ET NHL left with deals with NBC, CBC and TSN LOS ANGELES -- ESPN will not pick up a $60 million option to retain NHL broadcasting rights for next season, the network said Saturday. ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys said the network would have further comment next week. The option deadline is Wednesday. The decision was first reported by the Los Angeles Times and Rogers Sportsnet in Canada. While ESPN will not pick up the option on the deal it agreed to in May 2004, the longtime NHL broadcaster could try to retain the rights for less money. The NHL, in negotiations with the players' association to end the lockout that wiped out all of last season, has a two-year deal with NBC to televise games when play resumes. The league also has TV deals in Canada with CBC and The Sports Network. Without the overall support of ESPN and there $60 mil,,,,maybe now the NHL and it's players will see the big picture... MUDRUNNER
Re: NHL FALLOUT Can't blame ESPN one bit.Seems like the NHL and the players association made their own bed,and now they got to sleep in it.It is not good at all for the NHL to not be on ESPN.I was a partial season ticket holder for the STL. Blues the last three years they played, but doubt that I'll be doing that again for some time after the game comes back.A lot of people I talk to say the same. We'll see what happens, but right now things don't look good. Tominator
Re: NHL FALLOUT Can't blame ESPN at all. I don't know that I would want to sink that kind of money into something that's not going to be there. The whole NHL debacle is a shame. I really enjoy watching NHL hockey, but this is ridiculous. muggs
Re: NHL FALLOUT Wow, I think they'll end up picking up the deal for less money becasue the NHL will have to. If ESPN doesn't broadcast games...who will???? Even if they pick it up, they'll probably bury it on ESPN2 or something. Hockey will be one step up from the Xgames and the national spelling bee that ESPN2 shows every year. It's a shame, I played hockey all my life and love it, but most americans don't understand it and it doesn't translate well to TV so they automatically tune out. I honestly can't predict the future of the league and that's scary
VABuckSlayer
Re: NHL FALLOUT I'd almost like to see this happen to all pro sports. You have to draw a line at some point on what the players are going to get paid. The more they get paid the more the cost of tickets go up. I used to go watch our local hockey team till the prices of stuff got higher and higher and I seemed to get less and less. Baseball has gotton out of hand. A-Rod is an awesome player but... is he really worth $25 mil. a season? TO in football signed a contract last year and now wants more. It's absurd. It's not that they need more money... they just think they are better than the next guy who makes more so they want more. They have a good year and think they should get more. I had a great sales year last year but my boss isn't giving me a 300% raise this year. Maybe I should hold out! Yea right... I'd be looking for another job!! I'm disgusted with pro sports these days and I've played everything from baseball to tennis to football. I love sports but there's very little appreciation for the game anymore... it's all about money. My Tarheels won the Nat. Championship this year and now 7 of them are turning pro. I understand the (few) seniors but so much for my excitement for next year. They want the big bucks. I'm loosing interest in college B-ball now too. Where does it end? I guess 15 years from now the next A-Rod will make $50 mil. a year! Do I sound upset? Sorry for venting my sports frustration! Eric
buckbuster11
Re: NHL FALLOUT I dont think its that big of a story yet. ESPN is going to wait until they are sure there will be a season that does not include replacement players. If the players and the union work out a deal, ESPN will sign that contract I bet. superguide
Re: NHL FALLOUT Thank god for rodeo and cowboys -the last true athletes that pay to play. There's no garantees in rodeo-you win or you go hungry and you can't play half way. I love hockey but I'll watch the prca and pbr happily till they come back. SaskMan
Re: NHL FALLOUT I don't feel sorry for any athletes or any owners. The $$ they make is completely rediculous. I'm a hockey fan but I could care less if they came back, same goes for all pro sports, I could care less.

WNY_Whitetailer
Re: NHL FALLOUT I live in the Buffalo area and I enjoyed going to see the Sabres play...Expecially when the TO Maple Leafs came to town...It seems that both teams stepped up the game play when they go head to head. Anyway, we have gone one season without hockey and it seems that no one cares...I guess as time goes on I will not care anymore too. The players and the owners are too greedy and that shows in the talk stagnation. Too bad too...The little guys are the ones who get hurt. The hotdog vendors, ushers, bar tenders and everybody else who makes some extra scratch off of those games...I don't know if I will pony up anymore of my hard earned dough to go see another game. Don't get me started on the cost of going to a Bills game...Geesh.
