TreeStandBowHunter
I am not sure where this should go so being that I am a bowhunter, I thought this would be a good place to start. I have a few salt lick stations set up behind my house. I found belly hair on the one. It wasn't just a few strands either, it was a big clump. Does anyone know what that could be from? There are coyotes in the region but I never seen or heard them around here though. Also, there is no blood or anything like that so I am ruling out foul play by another animal . I was thinking maybe a mother that had just gave birth to a fawn or something because I have found real small deer turds along the trail around the salt licks but would giving birth cause that??? IowaDeerHunter
Re: Deer Hair I don't know TSBH, I always find the same thing. and that is year round! I have always wondered why the hari is there, I don't think they would lay down and it would come off. Good question though, gopefully someone knows. VermontHunter
Re: Deer Hair I would have to agree with Fly,,,,,,This is the time of year for the deer to shed their winter coat and I'm betting they are in their grooming stage.... christsavedme
Re: Deer Hair I will have to go with the shedding answer. I always find a lot of hair around our licks this time of year. That is the only logical reasoning I can come up with.
buckee
Re: Deer Hair It's possible that the combinatin of shedding their winter coats this time of the year, coupled with a nursing fawn could have been the reason for the clumps of hair there. Just a guess.

[/ QUOTE ] Hey I just realized something.....I never did put this in the bowhunting room like I thought I was Anyway, thanks. I was thinking about shedding but I didn't know exactly how much a deer can shed....at least like that anyway.
Tominator
Re: Deer Hair Yeah, my buddy ohiobucks and I have seen that while shed hunting. We commonly find huge clumps of the stuff, I mean fistfuls. Tom was telling me that around food sources (and I imagine salt licks too) the deer will fight with each other to get at the food/salt, and knock out tufts of hair that is shedding this time of year. If you've ever seen deer stand on the hind legs and kick each other, it stands to reason that they will knock out some of each others fur. Tom also said that they will bite each other too when fighting for food. I found some big clumps in a tree while turkey hunting about a month ago. I've never seen it in a tree like that. All the deer around here now have their red coats.

wtnhunt
Re: Deer Hair Have to agree with Chris. We have pics at our mineral site of deer about to fight. Another possibility could maybe be grooming. Have watched deer groom each other around our mineral site on several occasions.
