If you had only 1 decoy.......?????

I have a beded doe decoy that is made from collaspable foam rubber and seperate neck and head. Its designed for easy packing in and out I guess. I forget the brand but all the white parts on a normal deer are painted orange for safety.

Even at close range it looks real good and I feel it could fool a deer...

I just have no idea how or where to use it. I will be using it during November rifle and December ML seasons where there are no leaves on the trees and most likely snow of various depths.

I assume already that an open area is better then brushy, but how would you set it up? Position to stands, distance, face what direction, open fields, log roads????

Help!!!!

Oh and before everyone suggests using another make or type. Thats not an option. This is what I have and is ALL I will be using.

I tried my 3D targets last year and it was more of a pain in the butt then it was worth and they did not draw anything to me.

Beside if anyone has seen my targets they would say "-shoot them and put them out of there missery..." LOL

Re: If you had only 1 decoy.......?????

VT,

I have used the plastic standing decoys but have not used the bedding decoys like you have... I would think putting it in a field a little way out from a field edge would be good... as far as distance from stand goes you are going to want to be able to shoot comfortably 30-40 yards beyond the decoy in case a deer hangs up... I don't think the facing direction will be as important with a bedded deer, but I would have it looking into the field... also would put some doe estrus around the decoy... lastly but the most important is thinking about your position to the decoy and where some idiot might see it and take a shot at it with you in between...

Hope this helps

Re: If you had only 1 decoy.......?????

I plan to try it out during the rut here in our Nov rifle season so placement will be well over 50 to 100 yards away from me.

Since our rifle season is buck only then I am not worried about it being shot at. Its not going to be next to any roads so poachers will not be an issue either.

Thanks

Re: If you had only 1 decoy.......?????

there's a great article in this month's outdoor life about decoying. it's pretty good.

in a nutshell, i'll tell you this: use a buck decoy if you can. if using a buck decoy, face it to you or at least quartering to you. if using a doe decoy, face it away, or quartering away. place it about 20 yards away from your stand, and use it in as open as your terrain allows, preferably up on a hill.

oh, and carry it upside down when walking in or out.

Only a bedded decoy...I would say perhaps putting in at 20 yards from a fields edge just off of a well used trail facing away from the wind. (deer usually lay facing the same way as the wind is blowing and scanning downwind.

Watch out for coyotes or wolves (if in your area). I put a fawn decoy out in a field and left it over night. There are big bite marks in its rear end and neck. LOL.

Re: If you had only 1 decoy.......?????

I WENT TO A DECOY SEMINAR BY STAN POTTS LAST YEAR AND HE RECOMMENDED A BUCK DECOY DURING THE RUT TO BRING IN MATURE BUCKS.HE ALSO SAID TO PUT IT A LITTLE FARTHER UPWIND THAN YOU PLAN TO SHOOT BECAUSE A BUCK WILL MOST LIKELY CIRCLE DOWNWIND OF A DECY TO SCENT CHECK IT.NEVER TRIED IT MYSELF THOUGH.

Re: If you had only 1 decoy.......?????

I've got a buck decoy, but have only used it a hand full of times. It is the Renzo one.

Last year, I had it spook a small six pointer. The same night, I had a nice buck come in but it was right at the last few minutes of light. I don't think he saw the decoy and he ignored the buck scent I'd put out.

I'm going to try my decoy this week a couple times, as the pre-rut is starting to kick in around here.
