Got my 3rd and 4th chipmunks on the year today..

Recommended Posts

Well today after school, I elected to go chipmunk hunting with my pellet gun. As I was walking through the woods, I was hearing chipmunk tweets all around me. I figured it must be the mating season. So as I was walking, I heard a chipmunk tweet that was really close. I froze. I looked around and saw a nice male dive into a hollowed out dead tree. I sat for about 10 minutes. Nothing. He wouldn't come out. Maybe he found a female to mate with. So I walked by my usual hot spot, an old rock wall that used to protect the railroad tracks that ran through there. Nothing was happening at the wall. Usually when you walk by the wall, they flinch or run away, weaving in and out of the rocks. So I went up to another one of my hot spots. As I was walking, a grey squirrel starting barking. He sounded off the alarm. The chipmunk ( at the time I didn't see ) then ran across the rock pile he was sitting on and froze, giving me a perfect oppurtunity. I shot. Hit him in the spine and down he went. No exit wound. Chipmunk #3 on the season down! So back the way I came I went. But this time, I get really stealthy by the rock wall. That was all I needed to walk up on two males chasing eachother. These two chasing eachother confirmed my suspicion of the mating season. Well, the one chipmunk that decided to walk up to me at about 7 yards was the one who got shot. He stuck his head up over a rock with just its chest and it's head showing. I tried for a chest shot, I really did, but the head just got in the way... blush.gif Chipmunk #4 on the season down!

Well. This year I intend on tanning and selling a few furs. Not sure how much I could get for them. Any ideas or requests for skins?

YOu may want to check to make sure that is legal. Dunno about NY, but here, and in a few states i know for sure that is not legal.

Good job! Anyone ever eat those??? I know you'd have to kill about a dozen, but do they taste like squirrel??

Chipmunks and dumplins has a nice ring to it.

Or is called chiplins??? (I crack myself up) smirk.gif

they keep my eyes sharp and my shooting sharp for squirrel season.

thats not a very good reason to shoot them.

I just don't friggin get it. No matter where I post a story about me shooting chipmunks, somebody always has a problem with it. Guess what folks!? It's legal. You may not agree with it, but it's legal! They are garden destroyers and occasionally get into peoples houses. I am doing my best at keeping my local population down. Some say that they are cute and shouldn't be shot etc... So is a 1/2 year old fawn that I let walk that ends up at the butcher later that night. Tough nuts.

Besides, atleast I am on our side and not with "them".

Here's a question, if you are trying to cut the population because they are garden destroyers why are you taking a break while they breed? You do realize that if that is your purpose, every female you shot now would be 6 less that will be around in a couple months? (assuming they have 5 or 6 babies, i don't know how many they have)

fisherguy, it is just another reason for me to go back out. The amount of these guys running around after the mating season is incredulous! The young ones are the ones that get shot first. The older ones have a few scars on them.. lol... But I take breaks on shooting them because I do not want to completely eliminate every chipmunk in the neighborhood, although the laws permit it, I want the chipmunks to be there next year and the year after. Looking forward to my younger brother getting his first.

Squirrelhunter91 ... your my new hero!

I like the way you hold your own against some of these guys. I also like your detailed writtings of your hunts. It is entertaining.

Keep killing those rodents.

Keep it up kid!

I agree. Ive seen this kid take it on the chin a couple of times because of this. I still dont understand why people choose to challenge him on this. They are considered a varmit and its legal (obviously) where he hunts so let the boy have fun!

By managing the number he also can stay hunting in the off season. I dont see anything wrong with that. Crow hunters dont try to eridacate the population and everyone knows that crow hunting is just a sport. I personally dont know, or cant think of, anyone that eats crow (literally).

Squirrelhunter, you deserve and "atta-boy" for holding your ground. Keep up the good work.
