Re: old time hunters

I have a rack-mount of a spike buck that was the first deer taken with the bow back in the early 70's. This came after eight unsuccessful years of bowhunting. It was a 30 yard shot (5 yards longer than I will take now). The shot occurred while I was coming home from a morning stand. As I approached a semi-open brush lot, I saw him bedded down in about 8" of fresh snow. With the sun shining and the snow fresh, he stuck out like a sore thumb. I moved a few yards closer until I could clearly see his vitals and let the old cedar arrow go from my 50# bear kodiak recurve. It was a perfect hit and he didn't make it much beyond 50 yards.

More recent years have been a lot more productive, and I have gotten a whole lot more bucks with better racks, but that silly looking 8" spike mount hanging on the wall is the most treasured trophy I own.

Re: old time hunters

im 17, been hunting since i was ten, and yet i still havent killed a buck

Not that i havent had the chance, i just thought it would b good to wait until i can get a real trophy to be my first, though im starting to have some doubts, afterall seven years is a long time for an impatient teenager LOL.

I did miss a decent eight pointer with my bow last year, just got too nervous and shot over it like a rookie would LOL

I still am gunna wait it out for my first bow kill to be a buck, ive never even shot a doe with my bow though i could've shot probably around 30 by now at my aunts farm, they are as thick as flys on a warthog

Re: old time hunters

Well sonny, I don't know if I qualify as an old timer, but my first buck was in 1996 I think.

I had been hunting my neighbor's wood lot and spooking deer as I walked in, so I called my neighbor and asked him if he'd mind me parking in his driveway so that I could walk in and not spook the deer, and he said "sure" so I parked my truck, walked in not even 50 yards and saw this perfect tree. Straight, perfect width for my climber, in nice open terrain for a clear shot and it had a heavily used trail not 15 yards from the tree, so I climbed.

Sat for about an hour and right around 4:45 I saw a deer to my left with its head down. It was walking real slow, acting cautious and when it picked its head up I could see that it was a buck! It was just a little 1 year old with a perfectly symmetrical 8 point rack. I got pretty excited (the same deer now would not interest me in the least bit), because I'd only had 2 or 3 opportunities to kill a buck at that point in my archery career.

Anyway, the deer turned to its left right on the trail in front of me and sauntered down the trail. This was November 1st, so looking back now, I'm sure he had his nose on a hot doe. So along he came right on that trail. I drew and put the pin on him and let fly. I heard this CRACK! and the deer took too big leaps to my right and stood there looking back where the sound came from. And I cursed saying "dang, I missed, how could I have missed?" and no sooner did I get done saying that, the deer's butt dropped once, he stood up, and then collapsed. He picked his head up, and licked behind his shoulder and died just like that, head laying on his chest. I'd say he died within 10 to 15 seconds of me shooting him. I never did look at his heart because it was warm that night, like 65 degrees I think, and I field dressed him in the dark with swarming mosquitoes all over me, but I think I must have hit him in the heart for him to die that quick.

Anyway, that's the story of my first buck. grin.gif
