Use broad heads, not the blunts or shockers. Wood chucks are pretty tough critters. If not, you may stick and arrow in them and eventially they may die, but in the mean time, you have one ****ed off rodent.

I have some old broad heads that I use on them. A broadhead dispenses them pretty quickly.

Alright, every day of the week, after school, I am going to hunt woodchucks. My bow isn't very accurate with the blunt tips or the shocker tips, so I am going with a 75 grain Muzzy 3-blade broadhead or maybe an 85 grain Spitfire XP (mechanical).

Man, I tell u what, chuck hunting with a bow gets addictive. My friend and I did it every summer from the ages of 16-18 until his grandfather sold his land off. I won't even tell you how many we shot cause no one would ever believe me, but we broke the century mark, EACH!!!!!

At any rate, we use to shoot them with different heads and use them as a test medium for the upcoming deer season. Granted deer are made with thicker bones and what not, but the damage done to the chuck still gave you an idea of what the head can do.

While I never had one duck my arrow, even when looking right at me, I mus tell you they are TOUGH animals. I can't tell you how many I drilled straight through the vitals with big mechanical heads and even fixed blades that ran off and required second, and even an occasional 3rd shot. In my experiences shooting them in the head is the quickest kill (obviously), followed by a chest shot with them standing looking at you. The broadside vital shot was my least favorite as they always seemed to cover a lot of ground with that shot.

Well, I have wasted enough of your time and rambled enough. Good luck and I hope ya score grin.gif

sounds like fun, one day my friend and i went after a rabbit in this guys garden ( it wasnt a residential area..lol) and we ended up shooting it and when we went to retrieve it we saw a bunch more and we had a good time shooting them rabbits and eating them later. it even more fun when you both draw on it and shoot it twice...lol...my friend his brother and I also like shooting bull frogs, thats a challenge!

Re: Going after woodchuck with my bow..

I got him! I got him! WOOT WOOT!

Told y'all I would get him!

Here is how the story goes:

It had rained the night before, and I knew that woodchucks love the fields after a nice rainstorm. I don't know why, they just do. So as I am walking into my ground blind at about 7AM, I notice a "rock" that normally isn't on the hill. I stare at it and wait for it to move. It didn't exactly move, it blinked it's eye. That's all I needed to confirm it for the shot. I shot once. The arrow went right over it's back. There goes that broadhead. That broadhead was a mechanical one. So then I nocked another arrow with a 3 blade Muzzy, layed the pin on its vital area and let the arrow fly. Man do I love that noise! The noise when the arrow hits the skin and does some damage! I didn't pin it to the hill, but I got enough of the lungs to stop it where it was. It had no idea anything happened. It was hit, tried to run, and then just crumbled. The blood had bubbles in it, so I knew it was a lungshot. The woodchuck didn't go 3 yards before it just tumbled down the hill. I used my Browning Micro Midas 3 with Carbon Express arrows tipped with a 3-blade 75 grain Muzzy.
