Chain on treestands

Are chain on treestands any better or worse than nylon strap treestands? All of the treestands I use now have nylon straps with ratchet fasteners to attach the stand to the tree, but I have the opportunity to get a chain on stand at a price. Why don't they make all treestands with either nylon straps or chains?

Re: Chain on treestands

All my lock-on type stands get the nylon ratchet straps like your other ones you have.

I use the one that comes with the stand to hang it(cinch type strap) and add a ratchet strap to make sure it does not move.

The only chain my stands get is a case hardened one wink.gif

Re: Chain on treestands

I've got some chain types and strap types but I always use a ratchet strap to make sure its not coming out of the tree with me in it. I even have made a t-type screw in to hold the stand while I anchor the chain or straps. Works well , like an extra hand when you need it.

They each have their pros and cons. I have some of both style of hang on stands. With the exception of one style of chain on stand I own, chain on stands are harder to hang in a tree than a nylon strap (rachet strap) hung stand. One problem with nylon strap stands is sometimes squirrels will chew on nylon straps and even cut them in half. I've had that happen several times. Once I even walked in to a stand to find that squirrels had chewed through the nylon strap dropping the stand out of the tree. You won't have that problem with a chain. For that reason alone I've been putting an extra rachet strap on those stands for insurance. If you are walking in and hanging your stand every time you hunt you want a nylon strap stand over a chain for ease of use and slience.

I have a nylon strap for hang-on....one of many different treestands I have grin.gif

I heard before that chains are a more pain in the butt to hang wink.gif

Definitely a pain to hang and take down stands with stands. The last one I took down was with a hacksaw. laugh.gif

You can replace the chain with the nylon strap. They sell them.

Re: Chain on treestands

Too funny- listening to all the opinions here. I just switched from straps to a chain. I got tired of fighting with getting the strap tight, a T-bolt, and having to work from the same side of the tree all the time. I sold my API last year and got an Ole Man Roost. That was the smartest thing I ever did for a loc-on stand. This stand is so conveinent to hang. The chain slides from one side to the other, so it's not a hassle to decide which side of the tree to climb so you can work the buckle or the racket strape. Just my opinion though- I'm glad I made the switch. Just a note, I've hunted with API loc-on's for 12 years before I switched, so I've got some experience with the strap. My neighbor always told me that straps are for bra's. LMBO grin.gif

I have to be odd man out on this one. I prefer chains. I do not find them hard to put up. Squirrels never chew on chains. I have always had a problem with nylon straps sagging after your weight is on the stand for a few hours, chains don't sag.

I guess it is another example of just use what you like but stay safe.
