Guest RJK
Are chain on treestands any better or worse than nylon strap treestands? All of the treestands I use now have nylon straps with ratchet fasteners to attach the stand to the tree, but I have the opportunity to get a chain on stand at a price. Why don't they make all treestands with either nylon straps or chains?
GWSmith
Re: Chain on treestands All my lock-on type stands get the nylon ratchet straps like your other ones you have. I use the one that comes with the stand to hang it(cinch type strap) and add a ratchet strap to make sure it does not move. The only chain my stands get is a case hardened one
Gator
Re: Chain on treestands Chain on stands are a PAIN to hang, much harder IMO than one with a strap.

puffy
Re: Chain on treestands I've got some chain types and strap types but I always use a ratchet strap to make sure its not coming out of the tree with me in it. I even have made a t-type screw in to hold the stand while I anchor the chain or straps. Works well , like an extra hand when you need it. Tominator
Re: Chain on treestands I've used both, and it seems to me that they're about the same, but the nylon ones are a bit quieter.
Rhino
Re: Chain on treestands [ QUOTE ] Are chain on treestands any better or worse than nylon strap treestands? [/ QUOTE ] They each have their pros and cons. I have some of both style of hang on stands. With the exception of one style of chain on stand I own, chain on stands are harder to hang in a tree than a nylon strap (rachet strap) hung stand. One problem with nylon strap stands is sometimes squirrels will chew on nylon straps and even cut them in half. I've had that happen several times. Once I even walked in to a stand to find that squirrels had chewed through the nylon strap dropping the stand out of the tree. You won't have that problem with a chain. For that reason alone I've been putting an extra rachet strap on those stands for insurance. If you are walking in and hanging your stand every time you hunt you want a nylon strap stand over a chain for ease of use and slience. christsavedme
Re: Chain on treestands All of the ones we have that have chains on them we have added a rachet strap just to be safe.....I don't have a problem with the chain, just like the safety of the strap! brad dryden
Re: Chain on treestands Ive only had rachet but if I were to get a chain I would still use a rachet I would just feel safer.
JimT
Re: Chain on treestands I do not like the chains. They do not seem to be tight enough. I use a strap with my chain ons. Sinches it up nicely.
hutchies
Re: Chain on treestands I like the I idea of having a chain on with a ratchet strap because if that strap malfunctions or breaks the chain is there to hold it.
too_pointer
Re: Chain on treestands I love the ratchet style strap, if you will be moving it around alot. I always put on at least 1 chain with a padlock to help keep it mine LOL. I find the straps can be tightened much easier than the chains. too_

The last one I took down was with a hacksaw.

Straight Shooter
Re: Chain on treestands Too funny- listening to all the opinions here. I just switched from straps to a chain. I got tired of fighting with getting the strap tight, a T-bolt, and having to work from the same side of the tree all the time. I sold my API last year and got an Ole Man Roost. That was the smartest thing I ever did for a loc-on stand. This stand is so conveinent to hang. The chain slides from one side to the other, so it's not a hassle to decide which side of the tree to climb so you can work the buckle or the racket strape. Just my opinion though- I'm glad I made the switch. Just a note, I've hunted with API loc-on's for 12 years before I switched, so I've got some experience with the strap. My neighbor always told me that straps are for bra's. LMBO
Guest ftw46
Re: Chain on treestands I have to be odd man out on this one. I prefer chains. I do not find them hard to put up. Squirrels never chew on chains. I have always had a problem with nylon straps sagging after your weight is on the stand for a few hours, chains don't sag. I guess it is another example of just use what you like but stay safe.
longislandhunter
Re: Chain on treestands I have several hang on stands that all use chains. I"ve never used one with straps so I'm not qualified to say which is better, but I've never had a problem with the chains and I've always felt very secure in those stands once they were up.
