johnf
The 308 that my father in law has is a Remington 742 Woodsmaster simi-auto. I didn't notice the number following the 742 but with the short barrel I think it's probibly the carbine. Does anyone know anything about these guns? Guest WVHunter129
Re: Remington Woodsmaster There is a good chance it is carbine since it has a short barrel. I don't know if they actually have carbine wrote on them or not. My father in law has a 742 ADL in 30-06 that is a carbine, and it might have carbine written on the side of the receiver, I just can't remember. Our whole family hunts with that particular model. I have a 742 BDL semi-auto in 30-06, my son has one, my brother in law has one. The BDL has a retangular forearm with basket weave checkering, the ADL has a round forearm with plain checkering. The BDL model was a deluxe model of the 742. We like the Remington guns so much my son and I even have the 760 BDL in 30-06. The 760 is a pump and the forearm on it looks just like the 742 BDL but a little shorter where it is a pump. The one thing you have to watch with the 742's is that over time, depending on the amount of shooting done, the inside top of the receiver behind the trigger will develop gouges in the top of the receive. This is caused by the screw type bolt design the Remington used. Some parts are available through Numrich Arms, but finding good receivers is had. AJ
Re: Remington Woodsmaster Good little guns John. I had a 760 Carbine in .30-06 that was my first gun, it was a great gun and I wish I had it back. I now have a 742 Woodsmaster Carbine in .30-06. The carbine was offered in .308 Win, 280 Rem, and the most popular was the .30-06. It had a short 18.5" barrel, used a removable magazine that held the bolt open on the last shot, and had checkered walnut stocks. It was manufactured from 1961 until 1980. Jeramie
Re: Remington Woodsmaster I think this is the same rifle I ended up with last year. It was my wife's grandads and he died years ago. Her grandma "loaned" me the riffle for a mutual friend. She then told me to clean it and store it. She's in her 70's, you do the math. It is a SWEET rifle. It came with a Leupold scope! I went ahead and let my friend hunt with it last year but I may have to put down my other Remington this year and carry that bad boy! It weighs a ton but its beautiful! johnf
Re: Remington Woodsmaster The gun is a carbine, I checked the websight, and as near as I can tell it was probibly made in the first 4 or 5 years of production. My father in law bought it new and said it's only had about 5 boxes of shells through it.

AJ
Re: Remington Woodsmaster It's mounted with a Leupold one piece mount. I prefer the dovetail mounts over weaver style mounts. The scope is a Swift Premier 4-12x40mm.

[/ QUOTE ] Boy that brings back memories AJ. Back during my college days just about everybody I knew hunted with a 742 Woodmaster except me. I was the only one lugging around a bolt action rifle (Parker Hale 30-06) but I'm not complaining now.
