Whacky Deer Behavior

Night before last, I had a deer trying to harrass me. About 3 or 4 hundred yards from my stand, I spooked a deer. It was too far to see what it was, but it ran roughly toward my stand.

About 1-1/2 hours into the stand I saw a doe walking crosswise about 100 yards out. She was acting very spooky, and almost sneaking along, but she wasn't looking at me at all and the wind was straight into my face. She turned and started heading straight for my stand, walking and stopping every few steps and staring and staring. She definitely was looking for something. She got about 30 yards away and completely stopped and stood there looking straight at my stand. She couldn't see me because I was completely screened by the stand. Next thing you know, she let out a snort and took off straight away from me on a run.

About 1 hour later, here she comes again, from a completely different direction. She was about 50 yards away and doing the same walk and stop and staring gait. Again, she was not looking at me at all. She was walking parallel to my stand and actually got by me by about 40 yards and then went back on her exact steps for about 50 yards and then turned around again and went forward again. She did this about 3 times and then snorted and took off again. Never once did she actually look at me this time.

I've never seen this kind of behavior before, but it sure looked like she was trying to find me. I'm guessing that the first deer that I spooked ran up near my stand and watched me go by. She may have lost sight of me and for some reason felt that she just had to find out what I was.

That kind of behavior could get her in a whole bunch of trouble when gun season rolls around. She was a pretty good sized doe and I would have taken her if the opportunity had presented itself.

Has anyone ever seen this kind of action from a deer? What in the heck was her problem??

Re: Whacky Deer Behavior

now that you mention it Doc i have had this happen to me twice this year.. i have never seen does so spooky ...

just last night i had 6 does come out about 120 yds west of me.. with a 20 mph wind from the west i know they didnt wind me and i was very well hidden in my stand about 18 feet up with plenty of back cover...

this doe is just staring my direction for a long time and then finally just puts up her tail and walks away... this is the first time i have hunted this stand so i know they havent busted me there before..

just hunting i guess...

Re: Whacky Deer Behavior

Yes I have a doe that doies the same thing. I wrote about this in another post recently...

3 years in a row I get an ole girl who busts me when I am sure, 100%, she does not wind me but she knows to look for or at my stand. I mean from like 60 ro 70 yards away in the woods. Trees and sapplings should break me up big time that far away but she knows to look.

Of coarse for me, I did shoot at her twice in 1 week 4 years ago and I am positive its the same doe.

She needs to go down!!! mad.gifgrin.gif

Re: Whacky Deer Behavior

Blacktails do that all the time, especially the mature deer. They seem to have better long term memories than the younger ones.

That's one of the reasons, I try to stay away from a spot for 4 to 5 days, once I've been busted. If I go there the next day, you can bet your booties that the deer will be checking out your spot, fully expecting you to still be there.

It amazes me sometimes at how long-term some deer can remember and how other deer have such short attention spans, and will forget 5 minutes after they've been spooked. Similar to humans, in that respect ...LOL

The more mature deer always seem to be the ones with the longer term memories

Re: Whacky Deer Behavior

The thing that I really don't understand is why she would try to stalk me. If she's so darn spooky and nervous, and convinced that something is wrong, why not just ignore the area completely? Why is it so important to her to identify what I am?

Re: Whacky Deer Behavior

Plain old curiosity I guess.

I had a doe come past my grass blind one time, about to go on her way through the hole in the fence, when she spotted me in the blind.

She knew the odd shape behind the wall of grass was odd and she was alerted, but she really needed to satisfy her curiosity.

She came over and stuck her head, right in my shooting window, which placed her nose about 4 to 6 inches from my broad-head ...LOL

Her nose was no sooner in the window, and she got a wif of me. She bolted back, ran half way across the field, like she had a fire lit under her, stopped at about 50 yrds and just stood there wheezing at me ...LOL

Needless to say, she alerted all the other deer to a problem in the field, but it was a neat experience, non the less grin.gif
