preacherman
Re: suburban hunting I heard of a fellow that decided that he wanted to hunt in the suburbs.........and he kind of got in trouble with the law for doing it!
tedicast
Re: suburban hunting In the area where I live, hunting the 'burbs is common. I have one piece of property, that is 7 acres, that I am basically hunting the edge of someones lawn, and I can see 6 houses from my stand. It was difficult to adjust to the first few times I hunted it, but it is the stand that I most consistently see deer from. Just takes some getting used to. A few things to take into consideration are.... One people will see you, so make sure you don't do anything to give people a reason to have a bad opinion about hunting. The other major consideration is to be very sure of any shot you take on an animal. It is really critical, because of the small area you have to hunt. Of course I am only bow hunting on this property.
Doc
Re: suburban hunting Well, the first thing I would suggest is that you invest in some of that Realtree camo that has the fire hydrant pattern. The lilac and petunia pattern is also effective around flower beds. Next, I would invest in one of those gametracker string tracking devices, but get the model that uses cable so that you can snag that deer to the ground before it jumps over the neighbors fence and croaks in the middle of his swimming pool. Another useful tip it to carry along a felt-tip marker and a big piece of paper so that you can silently wish the neighbor good morning when he comes out in the morning to get his paper. Urban/suburban hunting can pose some unique problems and it is probably a good idea to be properly prepared. Doc
wtnhunt
Re: suburban hunting Welcome to the forums. The property where I work is right on the edge of the city limits. Got the go ahead to hunt it from the landowner if I want to this year. Some great looking spots for a bow setup about 200 yards behind the parking lot. David_218
Re: suburban hunting [ QUOTE ] does anyone have any experience hunting in the suburbs? [/ QUOTE ] YES! I live just outside of Evansville, Indiana, and there are tons of home that surround my 15 acres. But I see lots of Deer & Squirrels and I do hunt on my property. I have bagged a Deer (Buck) every year since 1999. I have very few places to place a stand on my property but have three areas currently. Mostly I hunt Deer in Kentucky though, and have a few places north of me where I hunt Small Game.
Squirrelhunter91
Re: suburban hunting I am not going to make any statements that will incriminate myself and family... J/K... We have a special honeyhole with tons of deer. It is very legal to hunt and we have been doing it for years. Put it this way, in our county, there were 22 deer shot last season. My dad shot 3 of them.

I bet every morning I hunted he got his paper withing a 5 minute window...lol

Guest DaveGP
Re: suburban hunting i hunt just out side of cincinnati and by outside i mean right across the line by like less than five minutes. and i used to hunt another place where the land i hunted wrapped behind back yards and i would see people all the time... a lot of trespassers as well from the houses and i have seen a few good bucks come from there... last year i shot at a monster and only grazed him... he took off to the neighbors property and another neighbor who is anti hunting came running out with a dog... trying to intimidate me or something lol. little does his anti wife know the deer i shot was ten yards off their property line. she bought the best land around where i hunt and its like a sanctuary... i just hunt the edges i saw atlease 5 or 6 bucks pushing 130-140 and the one i shot at had a drop tine...150ish... urban hunting is great!!! dave

Maybe you could yell out to him and have him bring you a cup of coffee and maybe a bagel or muffin or something. Maybe he might even drop off the paper after he's done reading it. JimT
Re: suburban hunting I hunt the early sub-urb season here. I enjoy my time out there,,,but have a hard time listening to people yell, dogs barking, harleys, traffic, etc. When October rolls around I do not hunt the burbs much. Guest DaveGP
Re: suburban hunting there is a guy right across the street from me in delhi that owns a bunch of woods but if he catches you on his property he will promptly chase you away with a rifle! dave
longislandhunter
Re: suburban hunting I hunt in the burbs all the time. Matter of fact some of the biggest deer I've ever seen have been in small plots of land adjacent to developed areas. You'd be surprised how many homeowners will give you permission to hunt in the woods behinds their houses if you go about seeking permission the correct way. Where I live many homeowners have a real problem with the local deer devouring their expensive backyard shrubs and plants, and often they will give you permission to bowhunt to eliminate their problem. Of course hunting such property does involve it's own particular set of challenges, but the rewards can be great. Good hunting.
