I have no experience with the 597 at all. But from everything I have read, both here, and in other forums, I wouldn't take one if you gave it to me.

If you are set on the .17hmr. I personally would buy one of the savage bolt action guns. Sweet guns available in a bunch of barrel/stock configurations.

I read a review on them and they said they were a good gun. Can't remember the magazine though.

If you are talking about the 597 being a good gun, do a search on them here, and s ome other hunting forums, and see what people that actually had to pay for them think of them. I'm sure there are people that have good luck with them, but there are just too many bad stories for me to even consider owning one.
