tedicast
I have no experience with the 597 at all. But from everything I have read, both here, and in other forums, I wouldn't take one if you gave it to me. If you are set on the .17hmr. I personally would buy one of the savage bolt action guns. Sweet guns available in a bunch of barrel/stock configurations.
too_pointer
Re: small game rifle Ya, it seems to me there were some bad opinions in here on the 597 I would shop around some. too_
spyderpancake
Re: small game rifle I have heard a lot of bad things about the 597. My advice is to get a Marlin 917. $179 from wallyworld, and they will shoot better than most centerfire rifles at 100 yards. I am about to post some pics of something that i shot today, make sure you check it out!!!

I'm sure there are people that have good luck with them, but there are just too many bad stories for me to even consider owning one.
WIwhitetailhunter
Re: small game rifle I have a Savage .17HMR (bolt action heavy barrel laminated stock). Sweet little firearm! I don't regret this purchase one bit. In fact, I'd buy another one if I knew I could sneak it into the house without the wife knowing.
