How many switched ?

Re: How many switched ?

I am fairly new to muzzleloading. 2 years ago I bought a Rem 700 ml'er, and had nothing but problems with hangfires. Last year I bough my Encore, and love it. I wouldn't mind a sidelock to play with at the range, but I'm not sure I could leave my Encore in the gun cabinet come hunting season.

Re: How many switched ?

After having sidelocks since mid-'60's, made the switch

6-7yrs ago and never looked back. First was the Encore,

later with a custom barrel. Then 18 months ago, the

Savage 10ML. No more sidelock hunting for me. The

.54 Lyman Trade Rifle was a great rifle for a sidelock,

but for ease of use and cleaning, both the inlines

outshine any traditional rifle I ever used.

Another switched to inlines here. I used flintlocks (PA) and when I left I got an inline. I like them a lot more. I still have a Hawken flint 50 cal and a Hawken percussion 50 cal. They are for decorations only.

Re: How many switched ?

Well all of us that have been around for a while used sidelocks. I made the switch a couple of years after Knight came out with its MK85. About 5 years ago I bought a Knight Magnum disk rifle. I haven't hunted with my old Hawken since I made the switch but I still have it. Too many fond memories of the old days to consider ever parting with it.

Re: How many switched ?

Well, this year my wife was racking her brain on what to get me for my B-Day. Heck, I got so much stuff, even I have a hard time thinking what to buy next. Well, this year she got me an in-line, a CVA Hawk.... Anyone ever heard about them? Looks to be decent. Now I have to go get all the stuff for it since I've shot only flinters for the past 17 years. I'll NEVER quit hunting with my flintlocks, but I want to see what this gun will do.

Re: How many switched ?

I switched a couple yrs. ago from Rem. 700 inline with Burris Sig. 1-1/2 x 6 Electro dot scope to a T/C sidelock percussion. This yr. built a 60cal. smoothbore flintlock for spring gobbler hunting and am now in the process of building a .54cal. flintlock rifle for deer and hog.

[ QUOTE ]

Got any pics of the flinter?? Any certain style of flinter or just a working flinter...

[/ QUOTE ]

This is the Virginia style .62cal. smooth rifle..(I let it tarnish good before gobbler season) (20ga.) I put together with parts from Pecatonica. I put front and rear sights on it for spring gobblers..also may use some for deer and hog using roundball. It's got a Large Siler lock, 36" .62cal. octagon to round Getz barrel and #2 grade maple stock with standard single Hedgecock trigger at 2-3/4lbs.

The flinter I'm waiting on parts for will be a .54cal. Buck's Co. Andrew Verner rifle. 38" C profile .54cal. Rice barrel with Chamber's Deluxe Large Siler lock, single Hedgecock trigger and #4 grade sugar maple stock.

Re: How many switched ?

Nice gun!! Looks good! I haven't biult one on my own yet, my dad does a good job, he has built about 12 or more flintlocks. I know I could do it, I spent several long nights watching Dad inlay and shape... I have two that my Dad built, a 50 cal Lancaster (Davis School), and a 54 cal/28 gauge Pennsylvania smooth rifle. There's nothing like shooting a flintlock!! grin.gif
