Re: Shooting a roosted turkey.....

Brings to mind a different scenario....would you shoot a deer that was bedded down?????? Now I have seen guys do THAT before.

I couldn't do it.

Re: Shooting a roosted turkey.....

If it's after 7:00am here in Illinois, you can shoot a turkey out of a tree. He's no longer roosting at that time, which I would shoot him then. Granted, it's not exactly the way I would prefer, but I would seize the opportunity. As for shooting a roosted bird, NO! As for the deer question, Sure I'd shoot him, doesn't matter what position he's in to me, as long as i have a good shot . I had that scenerio a couple of years ago, but had to wait till the buck got up cause there was no good shot at him.

Re: Shooting a roosted turkey.....

I think if someone is hunting for meat in the freezer and a close, humane shot presents itself, why not? I've done it twice but only because I was close and new I could make the shot and I believe when the Lord wants me to be successful, he presents me the opportunity.

still in a tree...........no differance what so ever

But the question was asking about shooting a bird off the roost. Usually during the day, if a bird flys up into a tree, they are escaping danger. When they are on the roost, they are in bed.

Well if its light enough to shoot it and its still in the roost its not sleepin its awake and if its not smart enough to fly away then C-Ya dead bird. grin.gif

According to slaw's post...can't legally shoot a bird in the tree until after 7am in Ill. Its surely light enough to see a turkey in a tree before 7am...you saying that you'd be willing to break the law for a turkey? shocked.giffrown.gif

Re: Shooting a roosted turkey.....

Ditto gitcha... Sure shooting a turkey from the roost may not be in every hunters' book of ethics but unless it is illegal...don't make it such a big deal.... There are more important things to think about like and number of people dying in war or the safety and education of your children.

Re: Shooting a roosted turkey.....

I don't see any arguing? There is a difference in "shooting" a bird out of a tree and "poaching" a bird out of a tree. In my very first response to this post I said..."if its legal, knock yourself out" in so many words. wink.gif

Turkey season maybe over...but there are some of us who live and breath hunting whether its turkey, deer, bear whatever, it doesn't have to be in season to talk/debate it.

I agree tg, the safety of our troops and our children are very important...however this is a hunting forums and a turkey hunting room! wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Turkey season is never gone!!!!!!! mad.gif There's only 10 months 'til opening day!!! shocked.gif And there's fall season in between!!!!! laugh.gif

Turkey huntin' is a matter of life and death, if you're serious about it. And it's more important than that to the rest of us.

focus on the upcoming more important seasons Waterfowl and deer......

Deer season is just something to do while I'm waiting for turkey season to get here.

I guess some folks just don't get it. smirk.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

It sure is a long wait. Fall turkey season isn't an option in the part of the state I hunt in. So fishing, duck and deer hutning will just have to do for now. wink.gif

I can't believe you keep coming back to the "turkey hunting room" when there are "more" important seasons with their own rooms on the forums! grin.gifsmirk.gif

Sure wish we had a fall season in my neck of the woods. Oh well.....spring will be here before you know it. I might have to think about chasing spring across the country again like I used to.
