Your worst gun

Recommended Posts

I know some of you younger hunters may not have owned to many, but alot of us ole timers have owned "too" many LOL. I don't care what type of gun it is. A centerfire rifle, rimfire, muzzleloader, shotgun, pistol, whatever shocked.gif Everyone should have had one that just was a pain in the butt. Maybe it malfuntioned all the time, or the recoil was too much, you couldn't sight it in no matter, didn't fit you, see what I mean ? My worst was a 12 ga. Fox double barrel that the barrels shot a foot difference in 20 yards. This was my first and only side-by-side. I finally patterned it on paper and found neither barrel would center a pattern in 20 yards, and both barrels wouldn't come close to each other either. I got rid of it pronto frown.gif I appreciate any comments laugh.gif

Re: Your worst gun

Now how do we answer this without running the risk of being accused of "brand bashing" Mr. Mod???? confused.gifconfused.gif

grin.gif

I haven't had a ton of problems with any of mine yet. Still a pretty new owner though. My Traditions percussion cap .50 ML has given me the most issues. But those were most likely due to operator errors not gun errors. I pretty much have those worked out and haven't had a misfire in awhile.

Re: Your worst gun

i have a Savage .22 LR semi auto. the dang thing will not feed the shells very well, i can't shoot a full clip without the dang thing jammin'! crazy.gifmad.gif BUT, if i shoot the .22 Stingers out of it, it'll feed them no problem. AJ what do you think, would the spring in the action be too stiff?? confused.gifconfused.gif

Re: Your worst gun

Of the hundred or so firearms that have passed through my safe over the years the one that sticks out in my mind as being the biggest POS is the Smith & Wesson 22A semiauto pistol. Workmanship was mediocre, accuracy wasn't much better. Darn thing won't work consistently with any ammo.

Good thread Mike.... laugh.gif

How old is the gun? How many rounds have been through it? It may need a thorough cleaning. I have seen a good thorough cleaning fix more problems with rimfire guns that you can imagine.

Re: Your worst gun

The only gun I've ever had that didn't perform was a 25acp. I don't remember the brand, but every other shell would stick, some times the firing pin would stick and the slide would lock shut. After it went off by its' self and then the next bullet stuck in the chamber. I took it to a gunsmith and just gave it to him.

Same here! I have a traditions inline. Its very accurate but had to clean, the breach plug got stuck, and if its at the least bit dirty it wont fire. The slide stick as if you locked it in place with Gorilla glue. Ive killed with it and it does a dandy job but man its a TON of work. Im switching to a break over and using it as a standby.

Re: Your worst gun

My Traditions sidelock muzzleloader. Misfired on one deer, Delay fired on the biggest buck I have ever seen in my life(12+ pointer, I know he had at least 12 and did not count all the little kickers he had). After missing that monster at less than 10 feet I decided the traditions looks good on the wall. I will take it out to the range and shoot it occasionally but no more hunting with it. I went out and bought a CVA Optima last year.

Re: Your worst gun

I have been lucky. Out of al lthe guns I have owned, I have only gotten rid of one in disgust. It was Remingtom 700 MLS 50 cal ml'er. I was never able to get rid of the delay fire, and the blast from the primer was brutal on my scope. I got rid of it, bought my Encore, and have never looked back.

Re: Your worst gun

My uncle had a single shot 16 gauge that he gave me when I was about 12. It was a Montgomery Ward brand, but I don't know who actually manufactured it. Darn thing had a plastic stock and kicked like a mule. It was literally unshootable. I guess the synthetic stocks of the 1950's weren't exactly perfected yet... grin.gif

Mossberg 835. My numero uno POS!! Felt like a railroad tie in the hand and would absolutely not pattern any magnum (turkey load type) shotshell worth the proverbial pint of pee.

Have one of these, too. Can't keep the slide from flying off when I shoot it. Could have something to do with shooting a couple thousand CCI Stingers through a $49 pistol. smirk.gif

Re: Your worst gun

I had a LH Winchester M70 in 30-06 a few years back that would not shoot better than 3" at 100 yards no matter what I did with it. Bad barrel I guess. I eventually sold it. Although I wish that I had kept it & rebarrled to something else. I liked the action. I have since replaced it with another .....with the BOSS system. It shoots VERY well.

I also have horrible luck with a CVA Flintlock. Total junk. It seldome worked under field conditions. I was told teh lock was bad. I tradded it for 300 savage & 35 Whelen factory ammo. I never regretted getting rid of that one LOL

Re: Your worst gun

I haev been thinking about this thread since it was posted. I have thought about all of the guns I have owned. I would have to say that the only gun that after it was gone, I did not miss, was the Browning BPS 10 ga. I killed my share of ducks and geese with it, but it was just never a great gun to me. The rib was very soft and became a dentilated rib on a couple occasions. While this was easy to fix, it is the only gun I had this happen to. When it was gone, I replaced it with a NEF 10 ga, and I liked it more. Both were replaced by a Mossberg 835 that I like very much.

My biggest dissapointment out of the box was my Winchester 70 Classic in .338 Win Mag. The gun would do no better than 4" groups at 100 yards with factory or a couple handloads. The problem turned out to be Winchester's poor bedding. I did a pillar bedding job and now the gun will shoot MOA or better with factory or handloads.

The one gun I would never waste good money on is the Ruger Mini 14. I have shot a few of them and none were the least bit impressive. Like the saying I later learned goes "The best way to make a Mini 14 accurate is to trade it in on an AR15".

Re: Your worst gun

A remington pump action 7600 carbine in 30-06, just plain a dud. Have a lot of remingtons, my dad has had some for 40 years and great guns, but i found a lemon. It shoots terrible groups, the slide mechanism wobbles left to right when you hold the gun, which makes aiming less accurate, sometimes you have to slam the pump forward as hard as humanly possible to get it to stay closed, and the tube the pump action follows( no clue what to call it) came off of the main part of the gun. Back to their bolt actions for me.

From what I have heard the ones made in the last ten years, give or take a few, are usually the ones giving people trouble. Most of the older ones are great.

My worst gun is a Traditions muzzleloader. It's not that bad but it's not that great either.

Re: Your worst gun

Most of mime weren't really that bad. Never had what you would call a real lemon. Probably the worst was a lever action Winchester 30-30 but it was nothing like some of the problems some of you have had with some of your lemons.

Re: Your worst gun

The worst one I have shot was an old Rem. 700 mnt in 30-06. The bugger just pounded me and the pretty wooden stock was prone to warping causing the thing to shoot all over the place. The bugger liked to be free floated so it was a constant battle to keep it that way with a warping stock. End up replacing the stock with an after market and now it's a pretty good gun.
