Anyone watch the Tyson fight?

Re: Anyone watch the Tyson fight?

Yeah, I heard that it was pretty ugly. Tyson did well early but then got the hurting put on him. He tried to end it with a headbutt but failed and then quit.

Shame, really. He was so promising for so long, I would have liked to see him really dominate the title for many years like Muhammad Ali. I think his head got into the middle of him and caused his demise moreso than his ability or body.

I heard about it but didn't see it. Tyson is done though. He was great a long time ago but he's finished now for sure. Can't imagine he would try another come back after this!

He can't afford not to try for a comeback.

Re: Anyone watch the Tyson fight?

Anyone who says this guy was ever a good boxer knows nothing about the sport. Mike Tyson has never been a great boxer... he was a decent brawler at best. The minute he fought anyone with talent he got his butt whopped. Remember his first fight with Hollyfield? He (Hollyfield) kicked his rear end in in 1996. Then again in 97.. this was when everyone said Tyson was indestructible.. right outta prison and killin everyone.. YEAH RIGHT. The guy came out in the first round hard and tried to knock you out.. he was more psychological intimidation than anything else. The guy was very quick and threw wild hard blows trying to end the fight quick.. if you knew how to box and used effective defensive skills and weren't afraid of him you could beat him. The example is Hollyfield and Lennox Lewis. Two great boxers who beat the snot out of him because they were good boxers and boxed with good fundimentals.. Tyson knew no good boxing fundimentals.. he just came out to kill you right away.. if you didn't run from him and were a good boxer you could beat him no problem.

Mike Tyson is and was the most overrated boxer to ever step foot in the ring.. he was never great... he was just very fast and intimidating. The minute he fought anyone with talent he got his rear end kicked in.

Re: Anyone watch the Tyson fight?

I would have to disagree with ya on that one MattA311. If you watched Tyson in his early career there is no way you can say he was NEVER a good boxer. I know that the last 10 years or so is a different story, but you have to give him a little credit. This guy was one heck of a boxer in His day.

They were talking on ESPN this morning about him and there were several boxing historians on there....all of them(4) in all ranked him in the top 10-15 of all time.

He brought something that not a lot of guys did, the crowd....here it is the end of his career and he is still appealing to a sell out crowd....and not to count the millions of TV viewers.

Just think saying he was never a great boxer is going a little far....BUT hey that is just my opinion and we all know about those.....everyone has one right!

If you want to say he wasn't a good "boxer" than ok but he was an awesome fighter! He didn't fight Holyfield till a little later in his career. I don't know if Holyfield could have handled him in the pre- Buster Douglas days. I don't care what style he used brawler or boxer he kicked butt in the ring and you have to respect what he was able to do. I'm not a Tyson fan but he was fun to watch in his day!

I'd have to agree with Matt. I don't think he was much of a boxer either. I'd say he was more of a street fighter type. Pure brute! And he was good at that. No disputing it. In his earlier days, most of his fights lasted less than 2 minutes.

It was almost like watching a bull dog. He would just put his head down and go at the guy.

Re: Anyone watch the Tyson fight?

Sorry guys, you can't say he was a great boxer if he never exposed his talent to any decent boxers early in his career!! I believe he was a better and wiser boxer after he got out of prison!! He killed guys early in his career because he NEVER fought anyone with any talent at all!! He fought Razor Ruddock twice right before he went to prison and both the fights went to the decision and Ruddock lost both on the cards, one of the two was a split decison if I remember correctly... Razor Ruddock was never an above average fighter. You guys are basing him on being a great fighter just because he wasted chump fighters 30 times worse than he was in the first couple rounds. To me that isn't a good basis on declaring a boxer great, or even good. Look at guys like Roy Jones and DeLaHoya.. they always fought the best there was and won... or come real close.. Lennox always fought the best.. so did Evander.. and they were true boxers... Tyson was never a talented boxer.. just a heck of a good brawler.
