dogdoc
my favorite BAIT for catfish is fresh cut perch or cut shad. As far as a lure--I have caught a few catfish on a jig and pig fishing real slow for bass. I also have caught a few on spinnerbaits and believe it or not one on a buzzbait. billkay
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? I like hotdog chunks soaked in unsweetened strawberry kool-aid with a bit of garlic powder added or try making a thick paste out of ground hamburger and cornflakes with some vanilla in it. I've been told shrimp works well but haven't taken much on it other than a monster gill.
DSGB
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? Chicken liver tied on with dental floss, as mentioned, or use cut bait like shad, bream, or mullet works well.
muggs
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? cut bait is my personal favorite, the chicken liver works well too.
VABuckSlayer
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? I use shad or cut/whole bream. One thing you can do with the chicken livers is put them in a pair of panty hose and tie it off and put a hook in it. That will keep it together better. Other than fresh fish I've caught plenty of smaller cats on nightcrawlers but most bigger fish we catch on fresh fish. I've caught plenty of small cats on a crankbait while bass fishing and had a 20+ lber on a plastic worm once and broke him off in a log. Good luck which ever way you go! Guest Andrea
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? Biggest cat I caught last Friday was on a frog leg!! Course, you gotta get the frogs first! Chicken liver is not as messy if you keep it in ice. It keeps it firm. I have also heard of guys tying the liver up in a piece of panty hose with treble hooks. Night crawlers are awesome. You can inject them with a cheese/olive oil mixture that will attract the cats if the bite is slow. I gave up on commercial stink baits cause they just don't last and the only thing that was hitting it was too small to keep. Good luck!! deershed
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? I like using minnows myself. If you use liver let the liver sit in the sun a little bit before putting on the hook to dry out a little, helps stay on the hook better. Or before you go fishing get some panty hose and make little bags and fill with liver.Tie the top off and when you go fishing rig your hook though where you tied bag off. leatherneck
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? if you want to use liver, then beef liver is the way to go. it is alot tuffer than chicken liver and will stay on the hook better. We let ours sit out in the sun for a while along with some shrimp. let it get good and stinky. be sure to have some towles on hand though to wipe your hands off. hehehehe
hutchies
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? Yeah beef liver is cheap and you can get it slice for like $1.25 a package and cut it into chunks. I will not come off the hook at all.
Guest foulmouthfool
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? BEST I have EVER used is fresh, cut squid. I usually use shrimp, but if you do, peel them. They may not last quite as long, but you will get bit twice as much. For big cats below a dam, cut bream.
Guest gfourhunter
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? i use sucker chubs of shiners. i catch bigger cats on the than i do liver. most of the channel cats i catch are on shrimp or soft craws or cut bait. i also like shad. VABuckSlayer
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? Deershed... you were reading my mind! Another good bait we use here in VA for monster cats is Eels. You can use them whole or cut them into chunks. Not sure if they are available in your neck of the woods but they work well here. Keep them on ice so they don't move around much and it will be easier to hook them or cut them up. They will catch big fish and I mean 30-60+ lbs around here! horst
Re: Best LURE for Catfish? Ive tried just about everything and usually find that something natural catches much bigger cats. Frogs, crawdads, sucker chubs, nightcrawlers, cut bait, things like that work best for me.
