Best LURE for Catfish?

I like hotdog chunks soaked in unsweetened strawberry kool-aid with a bit of garlic powder added or try making a thick paste out of ground hamburger and cornflakes with some vanilla in it. I've been told shrimp works well but haven't taken much on it other than a monster gill.

I use shad or cut/whole bream. One thing you can do with the chicken livers is put them in a pair of panty hose and tie it off and put a hook in it. That will keep it together better. Other than fresh fish I've caught plenty of smaller cats on nightcrawlers but most bigger fish we catch on fresh fish. I've caught plenty of small cats on a crankbait while bass fishing and had a 20+ lber on a plastic worm once and broke him off in a log. Good luck which ever way you go!

Biggest cat I caught last Friday was on a frog leg!! Course, you gotta get the frogs first! Chicken liver is not as messy if you keep it in ice. It keeps it firm. I have also heard of guys tying the liver up in a piece of panty hose with treble hooks.

Night crawlers are awesome. You can inject them with a cheese/olive oil mixture that will attract the cats if the bite is slow. I gave up on commercial stink baits cause they just don't last and the only thing that was hitting it was too small to keep.

Good luck!!

I like using minnows myself. If you use liver let the liver sit in the sun a little bit before putting on the hook to dry out a little, helps stay on the hook better.

Or before you go fishing get some panty hose and make little bags and fill with liver.Tie the top off and when you go fishing rig your hook though where you tied bag off.

if you want to use liver, then beef liver is the way to go. it is alot tuffer than chicken liver and will stay on the hook better. We let ours sit out in the sun for a while along with some shrimp. let it get good and stinky. be sure to have some towles on hand though to wipe your hands off. hehehehe

BEST I have EVER used is fresh, cut squid.

I usually use shrimp, but if you do, peel them. They may not last quite as long, but you will get bit twice as much.

For big cats below a dam, cut bream.

Deershed... you were reading my mind! grin.gif

Another good bait we use here in VA for monster cats is Eels. You can use them whole or cut them into chunks. Not sure if they are available in your neck of the woods but they work well here. Keep them on ice so they don't move around much and it will be easier to hook them or cut them up. They will catch big fish and I mean 30-60+ lbs around here!

My uncle has a 2 acre pond that is 25 feet deep and there are some big cats in there.I went fishing one day and they would take it and run every time the chicken liver hit the water. It just depends what mood there in.I always take some worms, chicken liver, shrimp,.
