slugshooter Posted October 24, 2004 Report Share Posted October 24, 2004 Well, finally got lucky on 3rd trip out to the woods. I connected on a doe from about 50 yards out. I first caught a glimpse of her about 8:30 looking throug some trees and I kept looking for her to come into view but then it seemed liked she disappeared, I tried a few grunts, a fawn bleat, and my Primos Bleat Can, I didn't hear her bolt so I figured she just moseyed on out of where I saw her, I kept watching the area I saw her and 10 minutes later I caught sight of her again, this time she was moving to a little open area where I could take a shot, but I always prefer a closer shot, when she got to where I could see her good I turned the can over, she stopped, looked, took a step in my direction then went back to her original path, I said to myself, well, this is the only chance I'll get, so when she stepped in an area between 2 trees I grunted at her, she stopped and I fired. The Brenneke slug went right through her left shoulder blade, straight through her heart and straight out the right shoulder blade, the entry hole was bigger than the exit, which was strange, to me at least, I saw her hunch up, hit the ground, then drag herself back up, run towards the right, then turn around and run back the other way until I heard her crash. When I got over there I saw no blood, fur nothing, but I knew the general area I heard her go down but still found no blood or nothing. I knew by her reaction that she was hit good, I finally found her at the bottom of an embankment, right on the edge of a marshy drainage area, then I found the blood and followed it out, it turns out she made a wide half circle to get where she ended when it looked like she just ran straight, she was jumping over fallen trees and running under them. All in all, a great hunt, and makes me feel good that those rifled Brennekes are accurate to that distance in a smoothbore. Also, this is my first Doe to go with my 2 spikes I have taken the last 3 years. I'm glad I got the first deer out of the way early on in the season, there's a lot of hunting left til January 1.
