JimT
My buddy lays waste to chucks out past 350 yards with his .243, and got a coyote at 402 yards also. With the right loads the .243 can be everything a .223 can be,if not more in my opinion. One cannot go wrong with a .243.
AJ
Re: 243??? [ QUOTE ] but just how fast can a 243 win be? [/ QUOTE ] How does 4070 fps with a 55 gr bullet grab ya? Is that fast enough? These are obtainable with a 24" barrel: 60 gr = 3800 fps 70 gr = 3600 fps 75 gr = 3450 fps 80 gr = 3400 fps 85/87 gr = 3300 fps If the gun has a 26" barrel its faster yet. [ QUOTE ] how accurate? [/ QUOTE ] That depends on the gun. I have seen some extremely accurate .243 Win guns (1/4 MOA guns). Find the bullet the gun likes and you can do some magic with it. [ QUOTE ] how far can it reach out? [/ QUOTE ] Farther than most can shoot. For prarie dogs and ground hogs it will still do the trick easliy at 600 yards. Many hard core varmint hunters like the .243 Win for long range shooting.
Guest J_Owens_66
Re: 243??? I shot a 175 LB 9 point w/ a drop tine last year at 384 yards using a Ruger .243 topped with a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14X42 A/O. I was using my own reloads with 95 Grain Nostler ballistic tips at around 3000 FPS. It is a GREAT cartridge.

AJ
Re: 243??? Its a decent gun. Like all bolt guns, it needs to be properly bedded. On a heavy bareled gun, I prefer pillar bedding to get the best performance. If you can't get the trigger to your liking, there are a few good choices in the aftermarket. Add some good optics and you are on your way to some long range fun. Another option is the 6mm Rem. Its similar to the .243 Win but it has a bit more case stretch since it is tapered more. My personal long range varmint guns both shoot .243"/6mm bullets. One is a custom FN Mauser chambered in 6mm/06 Improved and the other is a custom Savage 110 in 6mm Rem Improved. They are setup for long range shooting (over 500 yards). Both will easily reach out to distances well beyond my capability. My farthest shot was with the 6mm-06 AI on a ground squirrel at 506 yards.
