Myself, I wouldn't have taken the shot he offered you. I'd feel much better having a close encounter with the deer to remember, than having to remember making a bad shot, and possibly not recovering the deer. You were in the situation, and called the shot, based on your confidence. I give more respect to hunters that pass up a possible shot than to those that take (even if they succeed) improbable shots.
