robk
well had a great itme and last night we had a first of firsts when jeramie and i both got a shot at deer and the way it happened i will let jeramie tell you but it was pretty cool to see it come to pass and i hope that tim was able to find the doe that was hit. not sure for sure who actually hit it but it was a really cool situation to get into. problem was we forgot the camera lol. so the guys were kind enough to invite me back for rifle season and it;s going to be cool hunting with them. thanks all and maybe next year we can get norm to coem and play with us in the woods lol rob k

Jeramie
Re: great time with jeramie and tim We enjoyed it a lot too Rob. Here is the rest of the story. If you want to read about the deer move down to Saturday Evening toward the end of the post.... Friday Rob was suppose to head out around noon. This would have put him in Locust Grove around 2:30-3:00. He called me when he arrived in Tulsa and had accidentally taken the wrong highway. He was heading NW instead of NE. We got him turned around and he headed to LG. I took of work early so I would be right behind him. Turns out I had to get some plans to Pryor on the way home. I hurried as fast as I could. Luckily he hadn't eaten yet so he occupied himself at Denny's. My brother was suppose to meet him at 3:00 but had to weed through the honey'doos first. He finally showed at 4:00 after Rob had finished eating. I pulled in a few minutes later. We headed to Tim's (my brother). We visited for a while and decided to get something to eat. A buddy of mine was going to hunt with us. He called and I told him our plans of heading to the buffet. We then headed to my house for some ML cleaning where we met up with Bubba (imagine that, a guy named bubba in Oklahoma). After we ran my wife off, , we cleaned some guns and went to eat. We gave Rob the grand tour of Locust Grove, he blinked so we had to drive through again. We later went to Mom and Dads to still his cam corder and visit for a minute. I finally stumbled in at 9:00 and went to bed. Saturday I rolled out of bed at 4:00 and jumped in the shower. I called Tim and Rob at 4:30-4:45 to make sure they were up. They were drinking coffee. I then called bubba...he had coffee on for me. I loaded up a ton of gear including the ice-chest and some deer steaks. I called on the way to the ranch and told them to meet me at Bubba's. They pulled in 5- minutes later and we were off. We got our gear ready. I drove Rob down to the spot, dropped him off and told him to stay put. I then parked the truck and headed back to Rob. Everyone broke up and went separate way but Rob and I. We sat there for about 3-3.5 hours and never saw a single thing but one squirrel. The wind was bad. I never have a good hunt when the wind is that bad. I got a little film of the morning but honestly it was very un-eventful and warm. We had enough. I told Tim to do a one man drive. We usually skip that but in this case we were getting desperate. I didn't want rob to go home without seeing a single deer. Besides, there has yet been a single day ive hunted out there that I haven't seen at least one deer. Tim slipped through but we saw nothing. We got back to the ranch and loaded up to head to breakfast. On our way out I see a yote in the middle of the field. We quickly turn and drive back through the field to get a rifle. I grab my .50 and slip through the hay-lot to get a 80-100yd shot on the yote. My cap misfired. That combined with a truck moving on sent him running. I finally whistled enough he stopped at about 180-200yds. I had already re-loaded. I sent a shot at his feet and he was gone. Oh well, grubs on. We headed to town....time to eat. After some grub at Cook's we were on our way to Tims for his pop up antique (ummm errr, camper). It only took about an hour for us to do Tim's "5-minute" job. Finally, we are on our way out again. Saturday Evening *If your waiting for the action just start reading from here down* We get back to the ranch about 4ish. I quickly tell Tim, Rob, and Bubba my plans. We drive into the field and Tim drops Rob and I off at our spot and gets out of there. We climb the fence and shuffle over some "deer-highways." We finally set up about 65-70 yards from our drop point. Bubba is about 250yds away facing the same field and a 54acre winter wheat field. Time is around the corner from bubba (another 250yds) sitting on a round bale. I realize we forgot the camera but we are in a great place for evening action. We sit at a big oak at the edge of very heavy timber and visit for about 30-minutes. Suddenly the squirrels go nuts. In this same spot three does jump every evening and the squirrels go nuts until they do so. The leaves are really getting rustled about 40 yards in front of us but we cant see anything (thick timber). I was standing up every 15 minutes to look over some of the rolling field and grasses. I stood up to see if the animal in front of us had jumped. I see a huge body moving through the grass and I tell rob "Buck, huge one!" I had based the size by the proportion of the animal. I threw up my scope and realized it was the biggest yote I have ever seen. It literally looked like a large German Sheppard. It moved down the fence line and was quickly within 10 yards of bubba. I couldn't figure out why he wasn't shooting? The yote winded bubba and it was gone, slipping back into the woods. After my heart slowed to 250 beats per minute I rejoined rob. A huge boar squirrel jumped several trees and finally rested about 7-8' above our heads. I honestly though he was going to jump in our laps, I know he though about it. He had a nut in his mouth and he stared at us trying to figure out what we were. Rob made a few barks and the squirrel barked back and finally went on....thank god, no rabies for me.. I stood up again to check behind the small berms. I saw a head. A doe had jumped the fence and was heading our way through the tall grass. Behind her in tow was her two fawns, about 50-60lbs each. I had rob get to his feet while I watched their movements. They were 200yds and closing fast. I kept and eye on them and would tell him when to stop moving. Finally he made it up and got against a tree for the shot. The tree had some small branches that hindered his shot. He then had to slip back behind me to the large oak. This grass is the same shade of brown as the deer so when the feed in its really easy to lose them. We would pic them out off and on but they were still pushing 140yds. I kept random checks with my range finder. I then spotted another deer that had just jumped. I though I saw antlers but it was a little to far to tell. About 5 minutes later he had grazed within 100yds and I could tell it was a spike. They finally milled within 103 yards. They were starting to feed behind a berm that takes them to a pond. I knew if we didn't get a shot the next time they would be visible was roughly 150 yards away. I told rob to steady himself and take a shot on the doe that was 103 yards away. He shot, she heart kicked, bowed up, and walked behind the tall grass. I told rob "Good hit!" Rob's knees are bad so I told him, stay here...Ill go check it out. I took my ML in-case she needed finished off. As I made my way over the fence and about 30 yards away I realize the deer were still in the field. I motioned to rob to get down and I dropped and started a 75 yard belly crawl to the tall grass. I got up to my knees to see a large doe at roughly 100 yards away. The tall grass was blocking her body so I raised slightly to get a shot....boom! She spun her tail, ran about 30 yards, stopped and looked back. All the while, Rob and trying to get my attention. I had crawled withing 40 yards of a doe on my right. We think it was the same he had shot or hadn't. They still stood there so I quickly began to load another. By the time I was ready to rock they had jumped into the timber. I started to look for blood and Rob quickly (ok not so quickly) crossed the fence and came my way. I told him to stay in one place but he wouldn't. He wanted to find something too. We found nothing. We met up with the other guys, got my truck and went back to check things out. We found one small pile of blood and it had a ton of water mixed in. We searched the timber with truck lights, two flashlights, and a spotlight but never found another thing. We decided to call off the search until morning. It was cooling of quickly so the meat would be fine. We headed to mom and dad's to eat. We had planned on building a fire and cooking Deer and Potatoes but we were all to hungry to wait on the fire. Mom had the grill going from earlier so we threw on the deer steaks and tenderloin. She had tons of left overs including cake and a huge bowl of Chicken and noodles (I kept the grilled pork chop for myself). Baked potatoes, salad, and who knows what else later we were ready for bed. The bottom fell out of the temps that night. It dropped into the 40's. We hadn't prepared for it so we froze even though we had a testosterone induced fire on hand. We woke sunday morning with the hopes of hunting for a couple of hours before i headed to church. Everyone had the same idea.... Toooo sleepyyyy and Rob was sore. The yotes were everywhere around us that night. It was pretty cool. At daylight we listened to several critters passing by including some deer. We took Rob to his truck and said see ya in November for Rifle. On our way out in the edge of another field was another big yote. Bubba tried to get a rifle on him but the yote didn't cooperate. Tim looked for the lost deer (if in fact that was deer blood) but he didn't find anything. Hopefully it wasn't a waste. Fear not Rob, its on again next month..... Jeramie
Re: great time with jeramie and tim Im shooting a 180 grn Corelokt. They are great, especially for the price. Ive never had a deer run more than a few yards after a solid hit with one. Great round and even better price...... Im looking forward to it too Rob. We will work out some details for real this time.... Im not freezing my rear off again... lol.
robk
Re: great time with jeramie and tim funny you should say corelokt as i just picked up some 100 grain corelokt express for the 25-06 and am going to sight in for them. i have heard great stuff about the corelokt and until i decide what my final deer and elk round will be the remington corelokt is the one i will be shooting. i hear they are excellent for pentration andholding their weight so that is why you have such knock down power you need good weight retention i understand the freezing your butt off we certainly got cold that night and what a day for tim huh rob k
Jeramie
Re: great time with jeramie and tim Lol, yep. Its going to cost Tim $1,000! The corelokt are brutal. As long as they shoot true in your gun you'll be happy with them. They split hairs in my Rem 700. Great round. In fact im picking some up today to get ready for season. Jeramie
Re: great time with jeramie and tim We left camp and left Tim to take down the stuff. He was taking forever so we bailed. He got in his truck to leave and the battery was dead. I felt really bad about that. Anyway, a guy we are letting hunt pulled his truck out to the pasture. They tried to pull start it but had no luck. He decided to give Tim a ride to Mom and Dads to get some help. Tims truck popped out of gear and rolled into the guys truck as they were leaving!
