billygoat
Alright men... so here is the deal, what type of tree am I best served to put my stand up in? I love to get up in oaks because of the leaf cover, but with the climbers, that is about impossible. So does a guy hit the oaks early with fixed stands, then move to locust and poplar trees when the leaves drop???? Just don't know... all I know is I need to get hanging stands and am at a loss with this new property? HEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPPPPP!
dogdoc
Re: Tree\'s to hang stands in? my main choices are oaks, hickory, cotton woods, and pecan. Pecans seem to lose their leaves a little earlier. Cottonwoods likes to sway in the wind really bad. My favorites are large oaks. You might go find several straight oak trees that you might want to hunt. Trim off all lower limbs so when hunting season starts you can use your climber on all the trees you have trimmed. todd
JimT
Re: Tree\'s to hang stands in? I mostley climb oaks also. Trim them up like dogdoc mentioned if need be. A pole saw can work wonders in a short amount of time.
Guest Finn
Re: Tree\'s to hang stands in? I try to get up in a Hemlock, Cedar or Balsam with hang on stands. The evergreen trees give great cover all year long.

GWSmith
Re: Tree\'s to hang stands in? I like spruce trees for the cover and try to get a hang-on stand in place before the season starts!!!

PAbowhunter4life
Re: Tree\'s to hang stands in? For starters, I let the cover on the trees dictate how high I will hunt. I have hunted from stands that were 10' off the ground and stands that are 20'. I am yet to be picked off while I was alert, but being stupid can cost ya no matter how concelaed ya are. As for trees, I let the tree dictate what kind of stand I'll use. I have chain on stands on the property I hunt that are 15' up in Oaks because the deer use the areas year after year. I also have 12' ladders in little bunches of sumac and oak because there's so much cover that I don't need to go any higher. If the deer move or they are out of range and rutting all day, I always have a climber handy and I go find a tree. You'd be surprised how much cover you can fit your climber in to. Take a little set of pruining shears and prune a tad as you go up the tree and you can stay very well concealed. There have been times when I climbed down that I looked up where I was and wodnered how the heck I got the Summit Cobra XL in there lol. VTbowman
Re: Tree\'s to hang stands in? I use what ever tree will hold my heavy arse and is over a well used trail/food source. Most medium to large maples are what I have to choose from. Some hickory and 1 very large pine but I hate the sap on that dang tree. Dont matter what you do you get it on you. But the cover is there year round so it does have its merits.
Tominator
Re: Tree\'s to hang stands in? You know, I rarely consider leaf cover when I select a tree. Around here, all the leaves are gone by early November anyway. Sometimes I consider backdrops and silouetts (sic), but if I get leaf cover, that's just a bonus. 1 tree I refuse to climb is a shag bark hickory, and one I think twice about is a red oak. Both have bark that's too hard for my climber to safely grab while climbing.
