Re: I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO

I would agree, if he stopped and didn't seem in a big hurry, I'd say he was about to expire. Especially after the initial heads down sprint. That is awesome, and I would bet that he's bedded down right inside those cornrows. He probably got to a spot he felt safe and then just piled up.

Glad to hear you and the wife both slammed one tonight. Good luck in the morning and I look forward to seeing both of your pictures on here tomorow evening. By the way, what state are you hunting in? Just wondering w/ Sunday hunting and all.

canine--best of luck tomorrow. You might have some tough tracking with very little blood trail on your buck. A walking away shot is not a pretty low percentage shot and more than likely you didn't not get an exit wound so very little blood dripping. I wish you the best of luck.

Re: I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO

You were smart to get out if your unsure of the hit. Its hard to tell your chances to many varibles. But did you see any of a blood trail before you left? or did you just sneak out?? Best bet is take her slow in the morning. Wait till good light , not first light you might disturb something you didnt see in low light conditions. Your in for a tough nite of restless sleep, been there . Hopefully you and the mrs. can both celebrate tommorow at lunch.. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!

I shot a nice buck 3 years ago the exact same way and ended up with a kill. Hope you find him. You say that you know you stuck him so don't give up easy if you don't find blood. The good thing about hunting stick and string is that if you dont find him he has a real good chance of making it

If you were just a little far back, with enough penetration he will be dead. Smart to ease out till the morning. Track slow but be very diligent and from the sound of it tomorrow you will be showing us a good picture. Not sure what the loud crack was unless you hit him high and back. Good luck and keep us informed.

Re: I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO

I can not even begin to express my feelings about such an extremely poor shot choice. As I have said before, too many poor shot choices or just plain poor shots are shown on videos and proclaimed to be "a great" shot. Sometimes those poor shots result in a quick and recoverable kill, sometimes not. A little more respect for the animals being hunted would be a good thing. I can only hope that the buck died "relatively" quick with little suffering and will not die from infection, starvation or from other predators taking advantage of his weakened condition. Hopefully, he does not die in the yard of an anti-hunter or worse, someone who is straddling the fence on the issue. Sorry for the rant, but I can not believe that any responsible hunter would be taking such low percentage shots. It is not like hunters today need the meat to survive. I can not say that I hope you recover the deer for any reason other than if the buck is dead, it would be a shame for the meat to go to waste.

Give the guy a break. He shot a nice buck, give him some credit.

Merely shooting a big buck doesn't earn you an iota of respect or credit. In fact, anyone can shoot a decent buck, provided they get a chance. In fact, I would bet a month's pay that the bigger the buck, the more apt a hunter is to take a marginal to poor shot. God forbid you lose out on this opportunity!

It takes a strong moraled hunter to hold out on a buck of a lifetime to present a good shot - there is a boatload of those guys here on RT.com. They post stories every year about this.

The shot described here sounds like a less than ideal shot angle, BUT, sounds likes the arrow hit it's mark. A very risky shot but hey - until you stood in his stand at that moment of truth - none of us can decide.

Ain't that the truth. Even a seasoned hunter who has ethics and morality can make a poor judgment shot. I know I've made a few. That adrenalin is a hard thing to control once it takes hold of you...I know.

I'm sure you'll let us all know how it turns out tomorrow.

Sounds like the guys shot was a strong quartering away shot. Probably entered back but angled forward with the crack sound coming from the opposite shoulder blade. Ive seen worse shot decisions on realtree videos, they turned out good and hope this one does too.

Re: I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO

Congrats on both of you connecting and I hope you find your bucks. It's going to be very iffy for the one you shot. I shot a big doe opeing day here and it sounds like the shot I took to a "T". I hit at the last rib, just off of the spine and drove it forward. I found good blood for 70 yards and then she quit bleeding. I never found that deer, I know I hit one lung. I was finding pink frothy blood. A deer will run a long ways on one lung and it's hard to track without and exit hole and the enrty hole being so high. Good luck on bothof the deer. wink.gif

Re: I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO

Man, I hate to come down on another hunter, especially when he is super excited about getting a shot at a trophy deer. And it's not really my nature to rain on somebody's parade, but win-lose-or draw, I just have to say that the shot selection that you described should never have occurred. Even if you find the deer stone dead, first thing this morning, it should be recognized by everyone that this is not a shot that should have been taken.

Now, before I start coming off as sounding holier-than-thou, I will first state that I too have not always practiced the best shot selections in the past. But we are suppose to learn, over time, from our mistakes. I know how tempting it can be to take just any ol' shot when it comes to a trophy animal, but eventually you should learn that getting shots at trophy deer means nothing unless it is done only by putting all the odds in your favor of a guaranteed quick and humane kill.

Just as you were influenced by bad information from the TV set, newbies reading these posts can be influenced by these kinds of messages, and I want to be sure that this particular shot choice does not go unchallenged.

Re: I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ON

If you stuck him in the back and the arrow was angling towards the front, you could of caught the liver. If you don't find him in the corn, go to all the bedding areas you know of, if he's not there search in between the bedding areas and the field you shot him in. My experience has told me that a wounded deer that travels far is heading for his bedding area. I know of several people who used this tactic and found there buck in his bed.

good luck

Re: I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO

I agree Doc, I have never taken a shot on a deer quatering away that hard. I never will again, it is a very low percentage shot for a quick kill. It'll take the animal down, but it does no good if you can't find that animal in time to save the meat. I just glad I learned this experience on a doe, not that it's any less of an animal. It's just not a trophy buck.

30 yards out walking straight away.....Nope, I'd never take that shot. Way too low of odds for a good kill.

Good luck. Hope you didn't waste a trophy.

Re: I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO

you made the right decision by backing out and waiting til morning.....I wish you nothing but the best in locating this deer........I also feel your pain a bit....Earlier this season I shot a big 8 at literally 7 yards in the front shoulder and didn't get enough penetration(only 6 to 8 inches) not to mention I shoot a fred bear G2XL pulling 70 lbs. with pse 300 dominators with muzzy 125 three fixed blades........My bow shoots 279 FPS.........I tracked him for about 400 yards that night before backing our and went back the next day and couldn't find him...It made me sick...It's the first deer I have lost in my 14 or 15 years of hunting.........I still can't figure out what happened b/c the next night I zipped a doe from 15 yards and passed through both shoulders on her(didn't mean for shoulder hit again, just confidence was a little shook)............Anyway the only thing to do now it give both deer the recovery effort they deserve........GL and let us know how it goes.........
