Well i cant blame you one bit for shooting....i probably would too. I have once pulled it off, but this was only 15 yards. I put it in front of the hit and let it fly except i burried it up too the nock. Anyways good luck on finding your deer cant wait too hear about it.

I watched a buddy hit a deer like that about 10 years ago. He shot it from 10 yards and the arrow hit the vertebrae and defelcted under the hide. The arrow penetrated to the fletching, but never entered the cavity. The buck was seen a couple weeks later making a scrape in an oak flat and breeding does. Those big old deer have hard bones. Its hard to penetrate them.

I definately wouldn't have taken the shot. I shot a doe about a month ago. 20 yards broadside, she was looking the other way. she must have taken a step at the moment I released, because I hit her a good foot back from where I was aiming. She was gut shot, and I didn't recover her. Not for a lack of trying.

My point is, things can very easily go wrong on absolutely perfect shots in this sport, why tempt fate on a low percentage shot. I'm still beating myself up over that doe that I wasn't able to recover. I would rather be able to tell the story about the "hog" that walked in front of me and didn't give me an ethical shot, then tell the story about the one I hit and wasn't able to recover.

I'm sure there are people comfortable taking these shots, but I'm not, and I don't condone them either.

after the way that some of you guys have been bashing him for the shot he took.........I don't really blame him if he doesn't tell if he found the buck or not. come on guys, lighten up! From time to time we all make bad decisions in life, whether it is in shooting a bow or something else. We are all human. Sorry, but that is how I feel!

Ordinarily, I would completely agree with you, but after re-reading the original post, I did not see any indication that he recognized that he had taken a bad shot. There are at least a few novices who are reading these posts and are forming opinions about shot selection and other subjects based on some of our discussions here. To let that shot selection go unchallenged would be the same as endorsing it. I think we owe it to our newbie members to point out bad info when we see it.

that shot is not a good shot 2 many guys at my deer camp have taken that shot and almost always never recover them unles they hit the spine and drop them. They wont bleed from there bc it is so high up on the back that it just fills up the chest cavaty. I think there is just to much margian for error with that shot.

"But I'm almost positive I would've taken that shot had I felt comfortable with it"

With that type of attitude it seems like u have no respect for the game u hunt that shot is not ethical unles u are useing a gun

Re: I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO

im not trying to start anything but the deer i shot was 10 yards away and i kno what i can do. 30 yards is a lil different then 10 and a neck/ heart shot is 2 if mine would have went out of sight i would have had a blood trail 2 follow. A down the backer will not. Thats why i am able to comment when u see the picture of my deer u will kno.

Even perfectly placed shots result in lost deer. Sounds like you made good contact. Don't get caught up in looking for only a blood trail, if he was walking in corn follow his tracks in the soft mud. Good luck and don't give up looking for him.

I have kept out of this one because I firmly believe in a hunter knowing his abilities and encompassing the big picture. Consequenses and rewards. I don't know canine48's ability at all. For all we know he could be a 3D championship archer with 32 years of hunting experience.

Now that I said my little piece, didya find him???? didya didya? huh huh?

guys, I wish him the best of luck finding his buck but how in the world can anyone say a walking away shot at 30 yards is an ethical shot? I don't care how good of a shot you are or if you are a 3-D champion--a walking away shot does not expose ANY good shot at the vitals.

Well goodluck in finding it...i would like too add the buck i shot went down within 10 yards of where i hit him. So you see why i might take another chance like that.
