My dad is always looking for different diets though, and I'm kinda curious what kind of foods you incorporate into this diet. Looks like you are really making good progress. Tominator
Re: Low Carb Diet now gosh darn it, that's just not fair jimt. my doctor put me on this diet on may 28th. since then i've MAYBE, cheated on it 2 or 3 times. i've been below or at 160 carbs for the whole day every day since then. i weighed in at 246 on may 26th and i'm now bouncing between 238-241, and it's been there for about 3 weeks. 5 lbs came off quick, like in 5 days or so, and since then i've plateaued big time. don't understand it. i'm going to call my doctor and see what else can be done. i'd be interested in what Jeramie's opinion on my situation would be too. TreeWalker
Re: Low Carb Diet I started cause my wife wanted to.....so we started together on my B-day.......It's been 3 weeks, and I've lost 16lbs and she has lost 12....... And I don't follow it (Atkins) to the letter.....I try to keep under 50 carbs a day, mainly cutting out breads, potatos and pastas...........my goal is to stay on it through the summer, and then we'll see from there.... Jeramie
Re: Low Carb Diet I started back to the gym about a two months ago. I started back with my brother, his wife, and my wife. Since then I have lost 8 pounds of fat and gained 13lbs of muscle. I have finally got my bench well over the 200lb mark an I am happily back up in the 240 range. My brother has gained somewhere in the neighborhood of 10lbs of muscle. He has lost a couple of inches of fat but I cant gauge how much (fat) weight he has lost. His bench is now pushing the 200lb mark, not bad since he hasn't worked out in 12 years. Im getting back on creatine in two weeks to catapult my gains once I start to near a plateau (which should be around a 250lb bench). If all goes well I should be about 185lbs by this fall, which will be a total gain of 20 lbs after my weight loss. Hey tominator, time to throw in some Cardio! Im not sure whether you're getting any cardio right now but it will drastically increase the amount of weight loss. In my experience changing diet is a hard way to drop pounds even though it is a necessity. You body is probably adjusting to the new calorie, fat, protein intakes. If you stick to your plan you will see that the weight will still come of just really slow. From everything I know about this, the human body strives for consistency. It will react in anyway possible to remain consistent, hence the slowing weight loss. You have to throw a wrench in the works and get your body to react. It has already adjusted to the low carbs and attacking it with a metabolic booster, such as a walk every morning, will get you over your plateau for a while (note: I said for a while). Just like body builders, once cardio begins to have less of an effect you have to step up your program. I'd suggest going every morning. Not only will it wake you up but it will allow you to sleep at night. If you go in the evenings your body will have to adjust to the new conditioning and it will be hard to sleep for a while. Another thing. Being concerned with weight is only good for so long. If you start a cardio program (and I highly suggest you do) you will gain weight due to the fact that muscle is more dense than fat. Buy a soft fabric tape and measure your arms, waste, legs, stomach, chest, and thighs. Keep an accurate log of these areas, measuring them about every two weeks. That is really the only reasonable method of checking body fat once you start any workout routine. The scales can be misleading. Let me know what all you're doing to drop the pounds right now and I will see if I can help a little. Everyones body reacts different under different circumstances but Im sure we can get you back on track. After the first initial weight loss it gets slower but dont get discouraged. You can continue to get rid of pounds, even if its one at a time. In the long run its worth it.
borch
Re: Low Carb Diet Well I start the low carb diet on 02/17/03 and weighed 330 lbs. I also do a brisk 4 mile walk 3 to 5 times a week. I have lost 71 lbs so far and am down to 259. My goal is to weigh what I did when I met my wife 20 years ago. I'm over half way there. Turkey season was much nicer with less weight to tote around. I'm really looking forward to deer season this year. Borch [ 07-07-2003, 10:03 AM: Message edited by: borch ]
G-Daddy
Re: Low Carb Diet I started low carbs on 4-14-03 and weighed 216 on 5'8" height. As of this morning I weighed 189. The diet is coupled with a brisk 2 mile walk every morning. I feel better than I have in years. I am headed to 165 and need to take the weight off before my Montana mule deer trip in November. strubedog
Re: Low Carb Diet My father in law has lost over 70 lbs by doing the diet and excercising. He started walking 1 hour, 4.0 mph, 5 days a week and is now down to 3 days. His Dr. has told him he can't lose anymore weight. He is going to cheat the system by losing more fat/gaining muscle to not get in hot water with his Dr. We are all proud of him.
borch
Re: Low Carb Diet Tominator, Soonds like your Dr. is recommending the low carb/high protien diet based on a couple of studies in the past year. You'll likely lose weight but much more gradually. Plus you wont' lose muscle mass like the low fat high carb diet out there. As far as the actaully carb levels needed to lose weight it all depends on your metabolism. For me I lost weight rapidly(5 lbs per week) while keeping my carbs around 20 and exercising several time a week. Now I'm staying at about 30 carbs a day and have much more gradual weight loss(about 1 lb a week). But everyone's diffferent. Also there are times I'm losing inches but not dropping weight. In this case I'm adding muscle while losing the fat. Still a great trade off. Good Luck! Borch
Tominator
Re: Low Carb Diet i don't want to steal jimt's thunder, i know this is his thread, but thanks for the encouragement guys. i'm under doctor supervision on this diet. i don't know if it's safe to go the Atkins way, you know real low carbs like 20 to 50 a day for awhile. part of this health condition i have (M.E.N. type 1) affects my pancreas. one of the tumors i can grow is called a insulinoma which is a tumor than secretes too much insulin. if i cut my carbs too much, and i have one of these tiny tumors, i could drive my blood sugar way low, i mean dangerous low. i tested myself the other day when i felt low with my wife's tester kit and found out that i was at 55. normal is a little over 100. that's kind of scary. anyway, i'm keeping at it. i'll have to work in more aerobic activity. chasing kids, pulling weeds, fertilizing, etc. isn't enough apparently. Jeramie, you have a PM.
