American v. National league?

I guess I'm on a baseball tangent today. grin.gif

Which league do you prefer?

For me, I'm a National league guy all the way. I love my Tribe, but other then them, I follow the NL way more.

For one reason IMO, it's true baseball. Heck, I bet most AL managers don't even know what the hit and run is, not to mention advancing runners, sac bunts etc...

Plus the whole DH thing, IMHO that ruined the AL.

let's here your thoughts

National league. So I can watch guys like Dontrell Willis, Mike Hampton, and Greg Maddux hit homers off other pitchers. Better ball parks in the NL also.

Re: American v. National league?

I'm a national league guy all the way too. Thats just the way baseball should be in my opinion. And that brings me to my interleague play rant. grin.gif

One problem I have with this interleague play is I think it can put the national league team at a real disadvantage when playing an american league team for one series at the american league park. If they want to do this interleague thing, I would like to see 2 series played between to given teams...one at the american league ballpark and one at the national league park. For example, the Pirates just got back from a 3 game series at Boston last week. The DH for Boston is obviously David Ortiz, while the Pirates DH was a catcher they just called up from AAA ball a few weeks ago. Who has the advantage? I would like to see Boston then have to come to Pittsburgh for a 3 game series and play the national league style ball. Dont get me wrong, I like to see these matchups. The Pirates and Red Sox hadnt played in like 80 years, it was a great matchup to watch. I just wish they would make it a little more fair by bringing Red Sox to Pittsburgh for a series.

The point is, american league teams have the luxury of sinking a lot of effort and money into a power hitting DH thats in the lineup everyday. But when the national league has to use a DH, it usually means that a bench player, or a "not everyday player" gets inserted into the lineup, giving the american league team the advantage.

But, I bet the Red Sox would still come out on top even without the DH

Ah...now thats more like it. grin.gif

Your right though, just using that as an example for the sake of argument. But given one american league team and one national league team that are equal in talent..the DH can be a big factor.

Re: American v. National league?

Good point, BB11.

On the other hand, the American League pitchers wouldn't be used to batting and sprinting to first base. They could make a case that AL pitchers would tire quicker than NL....grin.gif

My biggest problem with the DH is the fact that both leagues don't have it. Either require both to field a DH or don't.

Thats exactly my point right there. Thats why I'd like to see one series in each of the parks. The american league team would have the advantage in their park, and the national league would have the advantage in their park..so that kind of evens things out a bit.

Re: American v. National league?

I'm with ya on that one MCH, just having the American league use the DH doesn't really make much sense.

I always thought it gave the AL team an bigger disadvantage in the World Series too. Especially if the NL team had home field advantage.

Re: American v. National league?

Yep, same here Eric. You know the Tribe is my team, but AL is boring to me, NL is much more cerebral.

When I was about 7 or 8, my dad bought me my first wooden bat, it was a Ken Boyer signature model (now that ages me grin.gif), ever since then the Cards and because Cincy is in Ohio, have been my other favorite teams.

Re: American v. National league?

American League all the way. The American League is definately at a disadvantage in the WS if the NL has home field adv. I think it's rediculous that the all-star game decides it too. I'm not sure where that idea came from. I don't think the pitchers need to bat. No since in taking a chance in your multi million dollar pitcher getting thumped with a fastball. The DH should be in both leagues but I guess that's why they are both unique. Also they don't play all the serieses in the AL ballparks either. They alternate but not against every team. I'm sure the Pirates played an AL team at home at some point just maybe not the Sox. I like the AL myself but that just my opinion! grin.gif

VA, the idea of letting the All-Star game decide home field advantage for the WS, was Bud Selig's idea to generate more interest in the All-Star game, because no one was watching.

I'm not sure how he became the commish, but I think both leagues would be better off without him.

American league - I hate watching pitchers bat. What a waste of time. grin.gif

I'm still ticked that the Brewers left the American league frown.gif

National League all the way. I like seeing baseball played like it's supposed to be. You get 'em on, get 'em over, and get 'em in. Not, "whoever hits the most balls out of the park wins." Pitchers should have to bat. I bet now that Pedro's in the NL, he thinks more about coming inside on someone, because he knows he'll have to stand in the box as well.

Agreed! I love to watch a good hitter battle a good pitcher, and the DH provides more of that!

I wish the Brewers were in the AL also. I really like Ned Yost but I rarely am able to see any games up this way.
