Service engine light comes on after it stall out going down the road. I put it in N and shut off key and restart engine(sometimes takes two or three trys to get er to fire up) then slip it in D and get up to 60 and she dies again, sometimes I can go for mile, other times 2 or 3 before it stalls. Just started doing it out of the blue??? Thought at first it vapor locked, but Im thinking a sensor?? 116,000 miles on it.

Re: \'98 Silverado truck problem??

hey Martin,

it sounds like a fuel pump. when they start going, it will do exactly what you are describing, the fuel pressure will decrease bit by bit, until there is no longer enough fuel pressure to get enough gas through the injectors to keep the motor running. we have had 3 at the dealership in the past week with the same problem. one truck had a fuel pressure of 20psi when we checked it. specs are around 70psi. a poor guy from Delaware got towed in today, same problem with his 2001 Yukon. crazy.gif

I'd take it to the dealership and get them to check the fuel pressure. wink.gif

Re: \'98 Silverado truck problem??

did you pull the code??? if your check engine light comes on it should give you a code. if it is like my dodge, you turn the ign. switch off & on 3x leave it on on the third time, it should give you a code on the instr. panel. look it up on a chevy board, & it will tell you whats wrong......good luck

Re: \'98 Silverado truck problem??

Does it idle o.k.?I have a few buddies that have had problems with the fuel pumps on their Chevy's.Seems pretty common.I had a 92 GMC that acted similiar, but it would idle really weird and die going down the road.Ended up being the throttle position sensor.

Re: \'98 Silverado truck problem??

Since your truck is 96 or newer, you won't be able to pull the codes using the old paper clip trick. Unfortunately, you will need a scantool to pull the code(s) indicated by the service engine light. Some automotive stores will pull the codes for free...at least I know AutoZone does around here. I would definitely pull the code(s) before I tried to diagnose it by trial and error. It may save you alot of time and possibly alot of money. JMO.

Re: \'98 Silverado truck problem??

My fuel pump started going over the winter. I had to lay under the truck and beat on the tank with a rubber mallet. I have a 98 Silverado too. That was after I replaced the engine. Then the distributor (sp), and then the alternator went and two O2 sensors. All in 5 months and I have 137K miles on it. In my opinion I would check the fuel pump.
