Guest ronin
I just received my new elk gun a couple of weeks ago and was finally able to sight it in at a local ranch. I bought a Savage 116 accu-trigger 26" SS in 300 Remington Ultra-Mag. This year I had to change my hunting style quite a bit to a major injury I sustained two years ago on an obstacle course. I used to use my 45/70 Guide gun for everything and prided myself in close stalks sometimes as close as 25-50 yards. I can't do that anymore and after numerous blown opportunities last year I was forced to rethink my tactics. I had to become a long range shooter. My local deer/ varmit gun is the Browning A bolt 243 WSSM. I had to beef things up quite a bit for elk seeing as I drew one of the coveted Calif. elk tags and I have an Idaho tag as well. This is where my new Savage comes in. I am a Savage fan. I love the accuracy out of the box. Their triggers used to be only average but that has all changed with the Accu-trigger. Super tight groups with no shot anticipation. But...the recoil is pretty stout. FWIW, the factory pad had to be removed and replaced with a Pachmyer which tames things somewhat. Every shot also produced a dust storm in front of my shooting bench. Amazing. At 100 yards I was shooting bullet on top of bullet. My wife and I actually thought that the second and third shots missed the paper...at first. We had to actually walk down and look at the target. A perfect clover leaf. 200 yards was a about a 1.75" group. This rifle is relatively inexpensive but a great value. Recoil, though, can be punishing and not for the feint of heart! AJ
Re: Thoughts on the 300 RUM Thanks for the report. The 300 RUM will do the job on elk. Like you mentioned, it does have some punch to the shooter, and has a lot of muzzleblast. The 300 Wby and the 300 RUM come into their own at 400 + yards. But, there are few shooters that can realistically make use of this ability.
Guest ronin
Re: Thoughts on the 300 RUM My shot, should I be blessed with one, in Idaho will probably be 300+ yards. I have absolutely no idea what to expect for Tule elk. I think I can hit a target at 400 yards with some practice.
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Thoughts on the 300 RUM I would use a good bullet. At that velocity a plain jane bullet will come apart. CB

7th
Re: Thoughts on the 300 RUM I hope you get a good range finder, that will be a great thing to have if you are shooting long range. Not to say something bad about anyone, you said something that I would ask you to work on: "I think I hit a target at 400 yds with some practice." I do hope you will know that you can hit the target at 400 yds and with practice at 600 yds that would help alot. This is alot of gun to be shooting enough to get to know how to shoot it at that range. In school we do shoot 1000 yds with a 7.62X51 NATO but we are only scored on the 800 yd targets and most of our score comes from 600 yds and under. Sorry to hear about your injury and glad that it is not keeping you down. I wish you the best of luck on your hunting and range time. BTW, I have a Sav. FP-10 .308 so I can keep in touch with my long range shooting when the army don't give me the time. This is not my first Sav. and will not be my last. Frank. Guest ronin
Re: Thoughts on the 300 RUM Thanks for the advice! I use a Leica Geovid laser/ bino system that is pretty nice. I was keeping a 5" group at 300 yards yesterday in 95 degree weather and a 10 mph side wind. I'm not too sure how much that type of wind affects this cartridge yet. The heat may have been more of a factor. I mentioned the 400 yards because I used to easily knock down steel plates at 450 yards with my standard M-16 during my army days. That was with iron sights as everyone was made to shoot. I figure a good rest, a straight shootin' Savage, and leupold VXIII should help me shoot a little better than that. 18th MP BDE, 92 MP Co., 95BX20
AJ
Re: Thoughts on the 300 RUM [ QUOTE ] I'm not too sure how much that type of wind affects this cartridge yet. [/ QUOTE ] Wind deflection is similar to other cartridges in that class. Here are some numbers for a 10 mph cross wind: These are for the factory laods 150 gr Scirocco, 180 gr Scirocco, and 180 gr Core-Lokt® Ultra dist - 150 gr - 180 gr - 180 gr 100 = .6"---------.4"------.6" 150 = 1.2"------1.1"-----1.5" 200 = 2.2"------2.0"-----2.7" 250 = 3.7"------3.4"-----4.6" 300 = 5.4"------5.0------6.7" 350 = 7.5"------6.9"-----9.3" 400 = 10.0"----9.0"-----12.8" 450 = 12.7"---11.7"-----17.4" [ QUOTE ] The heat may have been more of a factor. [/ QUOTE ] While the hotter temperatures will typically increase the velocity, velocity does not have a huge difference. You can start to string shots vertically at long range but for the most part wind will do more damage to a group. Its still easy to shoot a tight group in the wind, you just have to shoot every shot in the same condition, or be very knowledgable in the art of wind reading, deflection table memorization. 7th
Re: Thoughts on the 300 RUM Dang, that was that smell, Mud Puppys all around! I have had a few friends that was MP's but for some resone (well beyond me?) they don't like Special Forces??? OK, Something that should help you on your shooting in posetion. Get a bypod and a waterproof scock. Fill the sock half full (just the foot area) with dried rice and then roll the top of the sock down so you can put a bead of sylicone (sp?) on the inside and sow it shut on the bead. (this will keep the rice from getting wet and mushy) then when you set down with your bypod up, place the sock between the handgrip and ground. Squeeze the sock to rase the site and lossen your grip to lower the site. Of the 3 sniper schools I have been to, this is by fare the best thing they tought me and I lucked out and got it in the first one. Glad you took this how I ment it and best of luck shooting. Frank. Guest ronin
Re: Thoughts on the 300 RUM Thanks, AJ! Interestingly the wind numbers for 300 yards match my group size.
Guest ronin
Re: Thoughts on the 300 RUM I've taken it from the best and your's was lacking! That MOS was always tough to get into. Seems my spelling was always a little too proper. Thanks for the rice bed rest info...I just might use it!
7th
Re: Thoughts on the 300 RUM ronin, If you would like some info on the drop of this, let me know and I will send it to you. I do wish you the best of luck hunting this year. The rice bag that I still use is over 20 years old. We got them and well they worked. Frank.
