VABuckSlayer
It really depends on what is too expensive to you. Quantum is what I mostly use but another decent reel is the Rick Clunn Signiture Series by BPS. Shimano makes good stuff too. I wouldn't by a reel unless it has at least 6 ball bearings. The RC model has 8 and is pretty smooth. I bought a Quantum PT a while back and it is the absolute smoothest casting reel I've ever owned. I got it on sale but they go for $160 regular. You won't believe how sweet that reel is though. Wish I could afford to upgrade all my reels to that. You can find the Kevin VanDam Quantums on sale sometimes at BPS for $80. They are pretty good too. Some people swear by the Abu Garcia reels but I just don't like a round reel. That's just me but they're supposed to be good too. horst
Re: Baitcast reels Ive got a Diawa I picked up at an aucton last year for a couple bucks, not sure what model but it has the magnetic drag system.Anyway I just used it for catfishing untill this spring when my other reel crapped out on me.I had the baitcaster in the truck so I thought what the heck, put my lure on, adjusted the drag, and its now my favorite reel to fish with.Adjusted right I can cast lightwieght twistertails and leadheads just as far as I could with my open face and its a lot smoother than my opemnfaced reels ever were

SaskMan
Re: Baitcast reels Shimano makes good stuff, some of the higher end stuff costs quite a bit of $$ but you can get some darn good baitcasters for $100 or so.
