Mosquitoes through window unti AC's?

Does anyone know (from looking inside a window unit air conditioner), can mosquitoes get into your house by entering the outside air inlet vents? I have properly installed, weatherstripped and everything, the window AC unit in my daughters bedroom. I mean everything is is very tight (with weatherstripping and foam). The **** mosquitoes are still getting in and getting her every night. I finally got mad and removed the thing and there is an awful foul smell coming from water that was laying in the outside housing part. I realize this is perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes and was wondering if there was a way they could get into the house from the outside part of the air conditioner? confused.gif

Re: Mosquitoes through window unti AC\'s?

My daughter ended up with as best we could tell, 104 mosquitoe bites. We were very worried and called the hospital and they told us that if she showed no other signs of allergic reaction, just to use benedryl to help with the itching. Suprisingly though, she never itched a one! Its like they were not even there except for the redness. I know they did not get in around the edges as I had put weatherstripping and foam around it and then used a fair amount of duct tape grin.gif around the areas to make a tight seal. I looked out the window at the ac unit and there was a lot of them going in and out of the vent. I am wondering if maybe something opened up or had developed enough of a crack that allowed them to find a way through. confused.gif

My daughter is fine now and the bites are almost completely gone. So is the air conditioner.

Swampy if the outside air vent is open this will allow them to get through from the outside to the inside, Otherwise they should not be able to get in unless the hole around the motor shaft has worn but if the unit is running I would not think they could slip through. Kirk

Never heard of that before...not saying they can't but never heard that question...the following is three species that will breed in man made containers(gutters, tires, pots, buckets, A/C reservoirs etc..)

Aedes albopictus aka Asian tiger mosquito aka Forest Day mosquito, mainly active during the day, not even active enough at night to be treated at night with spray trucks, small and black, white stripes on legs, on the head there is a medial white stripe, little bitty stripe right down the middle...differented from the following mosquito by this mark and activity

Aedes aegypti Yellow fever mosquito, looks the same as the above mosquito only it has a lyre shape on the head, look up lyre in the dictionary, should have a picture of that instrument, basically it is two lines that are crooked on the lateral sides of the head, this mosquito is active at night and down here has been outbred by the asian tiger mosquito, hardly seen anymore down here

Ochlerotatus triseriatus this is the tree hole mosqito but will also breed in man made containers and is active at night, hard to describe the way it looks cause I have always just compared to an Ae. atlanticus for reference, it should have more color to it than the other two.

There are some other species such as the Culex species that may be coming from other areas besides the A/C....

if you can get some water from the A/C, if mosquitoes are breeding you should have larvae and/or pupae in the water...if it is a permanent water species you will have plenty larvae and pupae, if it is a floodwater species, the age will be pretty uniform, meaning mostly larvae, if some pupae and larvae most larvae will be big and in the 4th stage

I will post a link for ID'ing them suckers(larvae and pupae) that has some basic facts also

Also, there are treatments for standing water that is breeding mosquitoes. They use some form of IGR(Insect Growth Regulator)...think we used some Altosid at the mosquito control district, it inhibits the formation of the exeskeleton of the adult while in the pupal stage, so it comes out retarded looking and is pretty much dead.

pm me with any questions, be glad to help

this uses adobe acrobat reader
