Re: Sleeper Big Buck States???

I wouldn't say it's a sleeper state. It's pretty well known now. At least ever since the Beatty buck anyway. There were at least 2 other real big ones taken in Iowa last year too. Brad Jarman with a beauty that netted 201 1/8 and Tim Reed with another beauty that netted 198 3/8.

If you combine B&C and P&Y records I believe Ohio ranks around 4th. I like to think were a sleeper state to keep everyone out! grin.gif

I think there are some big bucks in Indiana. Martin County where I'm from has big bucks. We prove it every year. We have people from the north come down to Shoals, Indiana and camp throughout shotgun season. It seems in my town only the mature bucks are taken. Even the young kids drill big bucks.

a few years ago a budy had a field and stream mag. with the top 20 whitetail states. maryland was ranked 3 or 4. maine was #1.

I argued this with him for ever, only cause il. was not in the top 20.

Ummmm..............then call me a liar, I guess. smirk.gif

I've seen some of the bucks (Booners!!) that the WV hills produce. shocked.gif They's some monsters down thar, fer sure!!!

Kentucky seems to be emerging as a big-buck state. I'd say it still qualifies as "sleeper" status.

Sleeper state for whiteys??? I would have to say N/E Wyoming and/or Montana. Believe it or not, they are beginning to take some pig whitetails in these states. Definately not where most traditional whitetail hunters tend to think of when pursuing these animals.

I don't guess it would do any good for me to claim there aren't any bigguns in Texas? Oh well...

Seriously though, the real sleeper isn't a state, it's a country. Try Mexico sometime if you want to hunt an untapped resource! There are BIG ranches down there, 40,000 to 200,000 acres, that have never been hunted. There's just no way to tell how many B&C bucks are running around those places.

Re: Sleeper Big Buck States???

My idea of real sleepers are areas you don't think much about for quality whitetail deer. Places that fall into that catagory are Northeastern Wyoming and Southeatern Colorado. Most people think of those states for mulies but forget that they have some great whitetail hunting in portions of those states. The rest of the states already mentioned are often talked about between whitetail hunters so in my mind aren't real sleepers.

A Sleeper province for Whiteys is BC. Amazing how many 160-170 class typicals and 180-190 class NT's are hanging out in someone's woodshed. Heck, I know of a 200-210 monster that was shot in 03. Betcha the rodents are chewing on those antlers as we speak. What's the old saying, 'You can't eat the horns'. shocked.gif
