Guest Andrea
Re: Sleeper Big Buck States??? You'd be surprised at some of the big bucks that come out of Florida. They may be few and far between, but when you finally see one....it's a whopper. Still looking for mine...........
VtBowhunter
Re: Sleeper Big Buck States??? West Virginia definately is, and no Alisha, I'm not lying. I've seen more P&Y and B&C bucks there then in any other state. As for my home state.........we're scraping the bottom of the barrel in most of the state, but we're growing bigger bucks fast in our area. Rhino
Re: Sleeper Big Buck States??? [ QUOTE ] Hey Rhino...I would have to say that Florida is a "Sleeper State"... Oh yeah...notice the WMA...Thats public land too [/ QUOTE ] Can't argue with that Gary. Now I'm wondering why you moved.
hoyt19
Re: Sleeper Big Buck States??? If you look at well know states like Iowa, Illinios, Ohio, and Texas, there are some rather well known areas within those states. However there are many places within those states that most people don't know about. Jo Daviess county in IL for example, is a great place to hunt. I personally took a Pand Y this year on the family farm and my brother took a B and C with the muzzleloader. There were several BC bucks that were checking in during our gun season. And I know of at least 1 170+in buck that made it through last season, just a good thing he likes staying right in the middle of my family farm. Hillbilly
Re: Sleeper Big Buck States??? [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I think there are some big bucks in Indiana. Martin County where I'm from has big bucks. We prove it every year. We have people from the north come down to Shoals, Indiana and camp throughout shotgun season. It seems in my town only the mature bucks are taken. Even the young kids drill big bucks. [/ QUOTE ] Don't anyone listen to him, he doesn't know what he's talking about. Listen to Derek instead. [/ QUOTE ] WEll, that's cool don't have to listen to me, but I know Indiana has some big bucks out there. You just have to know where they are. I truly believe Indiana will be a sleeper state when it comes to big bucks. There are some huge bucks in Indiana, not many but there are a few counties out there that have big buck kills over years. FSU_Seminole
Re: Sleeper Big Buck States??? Kentucky is a defenite sleeper state. In several recent magazines, hunters have taken some HUGE deer there. Maine is also another sleeper state for BIG deer. There they have mostly big woods but they have huge deer. Saskbuck40
Re: Sleeper Big Buck States??? States, what about provinces? It is well known that Sask and Ab. produce some of the finest bucks, and with a fraction of the hunters.
GWSmith
Re: Sleeper Big Buck States??? Saskbuck40, The reason something is called a sleeper-anything is because it is not well known. Take for instance the guy who pulls up to a stop sign with a truck that looks like its all stock or maybe it looks like its falling apart. Then when you lift the hood you find a built motor and the thing can do a very low time if you took it to the drag strip. Thats a Sleeper...Anything thats Well Known is not. Hillbilly
Re: Sleeper Big Buck States??? Everyone knows there are big bucks there. A sleeper state is a state that don't get full attention when it comes to hunting big bucks
elkoholic
Re: Sleeper Big Buck States??? Montana, Idaho and Wyoming all produce some big bucks due to little hunting pressure in most areas, allowing the deer to live long enough to grow big antlers. Deer in the 140 to 180 inch range are not uncommon, but lack of good nutrition keeps most of the bucks from reaching true monster status. The real sleeper is in Canada, with Manitoba getting my vote. Tony
Re: Sleeper Big Buck States??? Ohio is full of whopper bucks , i know i have hunted there early in my years . they have some real whoppers in southern Ohio in the old strip mines near Holmes county.. but i have heard that Colorado , North and South Dakota are some sleepers... Iowa is getting worse every year , with all the exposure we have had , the numbers are dropping each year.. i havent see a 150 class buck in 3 years... go somewhere else like Ohio , Kansas , Nebraska Illnois or Montana.. maybe saskatchawan or alberta.. [/ QUOTE ] No kidding Tony, I got to feel for you, everybody and there brother wants to go there. I've seen so many post on here about non-resident license info etc.. The fact is every state has the potential to produce big bucks. There's no magic potion in the Iowa soil that makes those boys grow bigger, sure nutrients have a lot to do with antler growth, but hunting pressure or lack there of has more to do with monster buck production than anything else.
