johnf
My wife is going to get me a late Fathers day present and is willing to spend $130 on a pair of 10X leupold windriver binocs for me. I don't have any at all right now, so that would be nice, but I'd like to have a gps too and don't have those either. Next year I'll be hunting a new lease that I've never been on. It has open feilds, some food plots, hard wood flats, pine stands and some thick brush. I'll probibly be hunting out of a climbing stand or a doghouse blind. Which one should I get? 6sixpoint_nobrows
Re: What to spend my money on? get the Gps, that way you can find the best way to your stand without having to wonder all around the place in the timber, Gps units are a great little tool to have, as for the bincos, you can get a good pair at wal mart for 15 to 25 dollars
christsavedme
Re: What to spend my money on? IMO it depends on how big of property you are hunting. Where we hunt gps's are not that benificial to us. So I would have to say spend it on the binocs. I know that my binocs are one of my most prized pieces in my arsenal when I go to the stand.....not only during hunting season, but scouting as well. Like I said this is only my opinion. So take it for what it is worth!
johnf
Re: What to spend my money on? I've had 3 pair of the $34 realtree binocs at wal-mart and have never been happy with them. The land that I'll be hunting is 1800 acers and I'll be pretty much smack dab in the middle of it.
Bow Hunter Derek
Re: What to spend my money on? I have a GPS and love it. But, it is more of a toy than a hunting tool. The GPS would become a life saver on a hunt out west or Alaska for example. Even on my recent Texas hunt on a 23,000 acre ranch, I never used my GPS much. So, my vote is for a quality pair of bino's. I went through several pairs of Wal-mart $40 or less binos before I came to my senses and purchased a good pair. I bought the Nikon Monarch ATB's. About $300. However, for $130 or so, you should still be able to pick up a decent pair of binos. My vote would be for binos over GPS, but it totally depends on the type of hunting you'll be doing. Orion_70
Re: What to spend my money on? My vote for the gps also.. I have the garmin etrex vista gps and don't use it that much just because of the areas I hunt. It has had it's day though, you'll use the binos 100x more though

bowhtr1
Re: What to spend my money on? bino's are what you want. You decribed fields and alot of variation in the property. You can learn this area and wont need a GPS. If you get the GPS you may use it the first couple of weeks and then you will not use it anymore. If it were all woods then the gps would be a must but you cant beat a good pair of Bino's.

jdickey
Re: What to spend my money on? Unless your lease is over 2500 acres, or if you're gonna be hunting public land any time soon, there's absolutely no need for the GPS except to use the lunar tables! Get the binos and the holder from Crooked-Horn Outfitters; you'll never regret it!
Rhino
Re: What to spend my money on? I'd go with the quality binos too. To me they are a necessity for hunting and a gps is not. JMHO BTW, I still don't own a gps but I've never had a problem reading a topo map or an aerial photo to get to where I want to go. Been doing it for many years. Tominator
Re: What to spend my money on? Binos. I have a GPS unit, one of the first to come out, and I never use it anymore. On the other hand, I use my binos all the time.

JimT
Re: What to spend my money on? Another vote for the binos..... I have a pair of Wind Rivers and they have been very good to me. I rarely use my GPS while hunting,,,I mostly mark spots on topo maps now. I do use my GPS all the time Geocaching though....
WaCoyote
Re: What to spend my money on? Binos for sure. You guys who buy the cheapest glass just don't know what your missing. Good glass is a necessity, a GPS is a luxury.
