Re: Scariest Moment

My only really scared experience that I can recall was the spring of 04 on my Osceola hunt in the Everglades. I walked up on a 8 or 9 foot long gator, laying along the edge of a buggie trail in the tall grass. I got less than 5 feet from him, before he lunged at me. He tried taking a chunk of my leg, but I got out of the way just in time. Thankfully, he spun around then and splashed into the ditch along the buggie trail. I kind of had to change my drawers after that experience.

On the same hunt, I also came "face to face" with a Florida panther. We had a brief stare down with 20 yards or so between us. I never got scared that time until afterwards when it dawned on me how ugly it could have been. I was in awe more than anything standing that close to such an amazing and rare animal.

I had a wounded javelina charge at me last spring while hunting in Texas. Too much adreniline in my system though to be scared. Just jumped back REAL FAST. Fortunately, he did not pursue me the entire distance. That could have been ugly.

I can't think of any scary experiences in all my years of deer hunting. Maybe my own mind games in the dark walking in or out in my younger days.

Fortunately the scariest thing that happened to me wasn't really life threatening in a sense, it nearly gave me a heart attack.

One chilly full moon October morning about 7 years ago I climbed into a tripod stand I had located next to an old giant oak with rotting limbs on 1 side. The stand was on the edge of a soybean field overlooking a deep corner about 100 yards away. The corner was between the beans & a creek bottom that lead to a swamp.

Well ironically I just went out and bought a new realtree hardwoods brown jacket. I climbed into my stand got all comfy about an hour before sun light. I had my right arm rested on the shoot rail. After about 15 minutes, I remember gazing up looking at the moon and thinking what a clear beautiful sky it was. I could see every star at that point. Then I felt a slight barely faint movement on my arm. I turned my head and a GIANT owl had landed on my arm. I guess it thought my arm was a tree branch. I can not describe the fear and terror I had because when I turned my head this thing was on my arm with its wings extended & it was right in my face. It all happened so fast & it was still dark. I could just see this silloutte & these huge eyes directly in my face. The only way I can describe it is if you've ever seen Batman extend his arms while holding his cape. Well that's how this owl had his arms extended.

When I moved my arm and SCREAMED LIKE H*LL I think I scared him just as bad. He flew off into another tree afterward I had to say a quick prayer because I was almost ready to jump. grin.gif

I'm sure that was pretty scary...for me...I'm rolling on the floor over here laughing like crazy!!!! LOL grin.gif

Allright Allright.......... grin.gif

Story #1 happened about 6 or 7 years ago. I shot a buck right before dark one evening but got him in the liver. Well its about 10 pm that evening and my dad and I are trying to find this guy. By the way, I didnt know this was a liver shot until later, I actually thought it was a good hit.

Anyway, there was almost no blood trail. So, there we are at around 10 at night in the some of the thickest crap I have ever seen. We were just getting ready to head home and come back in the morning. My dad is behind me tying some flagging tape to a tree to mark the last blood and I'm still up ahead poking around in the brush. All the sudden right in front of me the buck comes flying out of the brush, I put up my flashlight just in time to see him coming right at me before I turned around and starting sprinting out of there. LOL..you should have seen us getting the heck out of there. By the way, we found the buck the next morning right beside the tree my dad marked with the tape. I guess he made his last charge. crazy.gif

Story #2 occured a few years ago. I shot this buck out of the same stand as in story #1. This was another bad hit, this time a gut shot. To make a long story short, I didnt find him that night. The next morning, I'm driving down the road to my spot to start searching again. By the grace of god, I drive right past my buck a good half mile away from where I shot him. He's laying in a field, ten feet off the road and about 20 yards from numerous houses. He's obviously messed up pretty bad. Since I know the landowner I pull over right there and get my bow out. This buck gets up and walks (barely) right out into the middle of the field and then stops and stands there staring at the ground. He stays exactly like that for the next 10 minutes while I literally walk right up to within 25 yards. Remember, this is a wide open field in the middle of the morning. The bucks looking at me but doesnt move. I take a few steps closer, draw the bow, and try to finish him off. Just as I shoot this thing bucks up into the air like a horse and the arrow gets him in the back hindquarters. Then he comes running right at me, I actually hit the ground and covered my face with my bow. But he ran right passed me. I mean this thing went from being dead on his feet, to having all kinds of adrenaline in half a second. He ran through the field trying to kick the arrow out and then disappeared into the woods. I never did find him, but the farmer did a few days later.

By the way, this makes me sound like a really bad shot, but I'm not..I promise.

These two stories here are 2 of the 3 I have ever shot and wounded, and I've taken 15 or so cleanly with a bow. wink.gif

Re: Scariest Moment

I have 3 moments. One was being treed by a pack of feral dogs - had to shoot 2 before they would leave. Two was getting in between a sow black bear and her cubs. That wouldn't have been so bad except my lab wanted to chase the cubs! Three was falling out of tree while climbing up to my tree stand. I landed flat on my back and thought it was broken for sure. Luckily it wasn't.

Re: Scariest Moment

Not sure if I would consider it scary but dang inconvienent and painfull for sure.

I had the bottom section of my climber rachet down the tree while I was sitting on the top section shifting around in position when I took my weight off it. I forgot to connect the strap between the two sections.

I was about 35 feet up during rifle season in late November.

I tried to fish the lower section back up with the only rope I had and got it lassoed around it after like 3 hours of trying, but then the lower section got stuck about 5 feet up the tree, so I had no way down, or no way to lower any of my gear or rifle down either.

It was very cold and I had to use my belt, pack straps, and clothing to lower my gun down and then shimmy down, bare skin on top mind ya, and ended up falling 1/2 of the way down and landed partitially on the lower section.

Luckily I did not break anything but had one heck of an ankle twist.

Its was about 3 hours past full dark by the time I got to the truck...

Not very fun outing for me.... crazy.gif

Re: Scariest Moment

It's a tie and I'll shorten the versions down.

#1 I was hunting in the forest, I mean big woods, miles from any farmland, some friends were to pick me up at dark. About 30 mins after dark I was still sitting on a stump waiting when the wolves lit up all around me. It went on for about 15 mins until my ride showed up, I was happy to see them.

#2 I was walking through the thick spruce in mid oct. with the muzzleloader. From under a fallen jackpine a big old black bear bailed out within 10 yard of me. It was high tailing it but I **** near had a heart attack. crazy.gif

Re: Scariest Moment

Not too many really scary things, I guess I don't spook too easy, but I distinctly remember one night down on my lease. It was a full moon, and as I was getting down I heard this wicked sound off in the distance towards where my buddy Steve was hunting. It sounded like somebody doing a burnout on the pavement, kind of like tires squealing, but I soon realized it was a pack of yotes, and the were very near my buddy Steve, and they were almost between me and my truck.

That was a quick walk back to the truck. crazy.gifgrin.gif

Re: Scariest Moment

My Scariest moment ever didnt happen in a treestand or from hunting on the ground...it happened right here on the forums!

I recieved a PM from another hunter(who shall remain nameless but is in fact a member here) in reference to using a safety belt....

[ QUOTE ]

im only 21 and am very athletic. i know how to work my climber and am very good at setting it up. plus 20 feet is not that far. in the army ive had to jump from higher and never got hurt. i highly doubt 20 feet would kill someone or break any bones. also they sell these things to people who have no balance and are not very flexible that is why people fall out of these stands.

[/ QUOTE ]

That should scare everyone of us to the bone!!!

Re: Scariest Moment

This happened last year. Well it was my 2nd day into shotgun season. I woke up early and got into the stand around 5-6. Didnt see a thing. So i got out of the stand and started walking. Welp i started to hear dogs barking. And it kept getting closer...and closer...and closer...Then bamm they were in 20 yards of me. You could tell they were wild. So i droped my gun. I would of tried to shoot but i was to scared. And i never knew i could run that fast and my life. Man i was out of there in like 10 seconds. LoL...and yes i went back and got my gun.
