Re: Stand Heights

I hunt out of 2 different types of stands. I hunt out of one ladder stand that is feet high, another ladder that is 15 feet and another ladder that is 10ft. I also have a few lock-ons that i hunt out of and i usually place them about 20ft high. IN the ladder stands i have never had any problem with being winded. This last year out of my ladder stand at 16ft. i killed one deer with a bow and one deer with shotgun at 10yds. wind in their favor, so i'm not big with getting way up in a tree.

Re: Stand Heights

My stand heights vary. I have 15' ladders I hunt out of. My fixed stands are all in the 17 to 22 foot range. With my climber I go to whatever height I have the best cover. I worry more about haveing my shape broken up, then about how high I am.

I think that when you get over 25 feet or so, it makes the angle too steep on a shot in close, like in the 10 yard range. At that steep of an angle it is almost impossible to get a double lung shot on a deer close to your stand.

it may seem like im over doing it, but i dont like being winded by deer.

If you are consistently winded by deer you need to start paying a lot closer attention to scent control. I shot one of my bucks on the ground at about 12 yards this year after I grunted him in during shotgun season. Start paying very strict attention to scent control, and you will be surprised at how many more deer you see.

I have a ladder stand that is 16 feet up, but all the rest of the stands are 22+ feet (but no more then 30 feet).

Re: Stand Heights

20, 30, 40 feet? You guys are nuts! grin.gif

Of course, where I hunt there aren't any trees over 15 feet tall, so I don't have to worry about it.

BTW, how do you hold steady for a rifle shot when the wind is blowing? I've got a couple of 15 foot metal tripods and when its windy, they sway so much that anything more than a 100 yard shot is strictly guesswork. The crosshairs will be cutting a 12 - 18 inch arc across the target as the tripod moves.

well i do use scent control, my friends make fun of me because i take every precaution to scent control, just i dont want to blow it on something as simple as a stand height you know....i just look at it as if i can get up 30 feet might as well go ahead and do it, but your right, my first year hunting i sat on the ground the whole season and i had a doe and a big 8 at 20 yards and they didnt have any idea i was there, i just like to be safe smirk.gif

Re: Stand Heights

The height of my treestands vary depending on the set up and the terrain. I have a couple that are only about 10' to 12' in the tree but they are positioned to be about 30' above where the deer are moving through. The highest stand I have in a tree is about 33' to the platform in the tree. I have a couple of stands that are about 20' up that make you feel like your 50' above where the deer move through for gun hunting stands. Most of my bow stands that are back in the woods are set up to be about 20' to 25' above where I expect to have deer pass by. Obvioulsy most of my stands are not on flat ground.

Re: Stand Heights

I've had succes at 6 feet up and I've had success at 20 feet up. I prefer 12-15 feet. That way the shot angle isn't too steep.
