snapper
Horton makes some great crossbows along with a few other company's. I personally would rather use my compound than a crossbow. Alot of folks never shot a xbow and are misinformed of its capibilities. They think its a silent rifle...not the case. Generally xbows are ALOT louder than a regular bow, they are usally (unless you buy a really good one) slower than todays compounds and produce less KE. They are heavier and more akward to carry and manuver in the stand. The only plus side to a xbow (IMO) is the fact that you don't have to pull it back when the deer approaches, like a regular bow. You are still limited to one shot and usally around the same distances. My opinion...if your physically able to draw and shoot a compound...I wouldn't bother spending the extra money for a xbow. Guest ruffhunter
Re: Crossbow help buckmaster06, I've had two Hortons growing up, but I got an excalibur exocet (recurve), two years ago. Night and difference. Very lightweight, balanced and extremely accurate. Its a basic xbow and the best.
wtnhunt
Re: Crossbow help Think they just passed a law saying crossbows can now be used as archery tackle here in Tennessee. No plans on getting one so long as I am able to shoot my compound, but think horton or barnett either one would be a good choice.
Muff
Re: Crossbow help I shoot a EXOCET also...and I love it....but give them all a try and look at the best price for you.Just remember you get what you pay for.
horst
Re: Crossbow help I been looking at them to, my dads no longer able to draw his bow back due to the cancer and chemo treatments that have left him pretty weak. Im lost when it comes to crossbows.take 2 of them with identical 150 draw wieghts and compare them and ones advertised as shooting as much as 100 fps faster than the other. Then look at one with a 180 lb draw and its slower than both of the lighter ones Some have wheels on the limbs, some have what look like small cams, and some the string just hooks right to the limbs, and I have no idea which setup is better.I know Ive shot one with wheels that was slower than my kids youth compound and louder than my 12 gauge And Ive looked all over the internet and really cant find any place that explains the differences. You figure anything out please let me know, Ive never seen two identical looking bows that are rated to shoot that different
too_pointer
Re: Crossbow help I shoot a TenPoint WoodsMan Plus x-bow. It has the cams and is noisy, but also shoots around 300 fps. It is a 165 lb. pull. My next one will be an Excalibur, no cams, just a recurve, fast and much quieter. I use it cause I have too, but it is pretty nice. I still limit my shots to no more than 30 ft, and most are much closer. Both Horton and Excalibur are usually cheaper priced than the TenPoints. too_pointer

snapper
Re: Crossbow help Make sure you get one that has a cocking device if your not strong enough to pull it back into the locked position. Also, Mike, what do you do at the end of the day if you didn't shooting anything? Do you take an old arrow and shoot it in the ground? I know when my buddy Pete had surgey on his wrist right before bow season last year...he bought a crossbow and got a permit to use it. Prob. was he couldn't pull it back and lock it (thats where I came into play) and to release it...I would hold the string while he pulled the trigger! It was more of a hassle for him to use than anything...he couldn't use it by himself.
too_pointer
Re: Crossbow help [quote I still limit my shots to no more than 30 ft, [/ QUOTE ] LOL, I meant 30 yards, I am little better shot than 30 feet Gregg, I always carry an extra arrow for shooting it at the end of the day. I use a rope with hooks made to pull and lock it, it works pretty good. I have a place for a crank on my stock, but don't need it yet Mike
johnf
Re: Crossbow help I have a Horton Hunter SupremeSL and love it. The Horton's have a "Dial a range" that moves your sight up and down and is pretty accurate and fun to shoot. I can shoot accurately out to about 80 yards with it. However it is VERY LOUD. Because of the sheer volume of the bow I would keep shots as short as possible.
too_pointer
Re: Crossbow help [ QUOTE ] Shooting an arrow into the frozen ground isn't the best. [/ QUOTE ] I use a junk arrow, so I really don't care much LOL. I'm not sure if I could control the string by hanging on to it

If i dont have someone there to pull the trigger while i hold the string i just take out the good arrow and put the junk 1 in and shoot it into the ground. johnf
Re: Crossbow help [ QUOTE ] When letting down my bow I usually just hold the string and pull the trigger. ussually I just hold the string with two hands and pull the trigger with my thumbs. [/ QUOTE ] I always just dry fire mine. It hasn't hurt it yet. Just kidding. I usually hold the string with one hand and pull the trigger with the other.
