Hey guys,

A few days ago I made a post on myself having some success with rattling , took a nice 8pt ( pics will be posted within a day or so by Tominator. my scanner is down) and I said to you all I think its time to start hitting the horns or tickling them . Has anyone had any luck since then???? just curious. smile.gif

Rattling isn't very effective in my neck of the woods. Our buck to doe ratio is way out of control. Occasionally you'll get on a hot buck that will charge in but very rarely.

That being said I occasionally take out a rattle bag and tickle it a little. I never lay into it. It has raise a little curiosity in the past but I have yet to try it this year. If a see a buck in tow of a hot doe I may actually give it a shot for the heck of it but not until I know they are in a hard rut.

Had a huge buck in the field sunday morning!! Way to far to shoot with my blackpowder! I grunted nothing, the can, nothing! Rattled and he lloked and then keep walking!!! The morning before i grunted in a smaller buck! I passed him up!

I rattled in a nice 8pter a little over a week ago. We had a 3-day cold snap and this was the last night of the cold. I just tickled the antlers, nothing more.

I measured a deer last night, a net 157" 9 pter and the hunter said he was in full rut and came in to a heavy rattling sequence.

I tried it this weekend and it didnt work at all. I actually had an 8 pt that was walking away from my, so i let him get out of sight and then hit the horns together and nothing happened... Guess he wasnt interested. O well... Maybe next weekend?

stinger1 ,

Dont let your buck/doe ratio keep you from rattling .

Where I live in western NY our ratio is out of kilter too! But it works from time to time. 9 out of 10 it might not work but the 10th time you might have a smasher buck in your lap. On friday I had 3 bucks come into a light rattlin sequnece and was lucky enough to take the best one. You just never know.

good luck

I tried it today from 1:00-5:00 . I had a buck grunt at me several times, walking all around me. He never showed his face on the plot or the clearing around it. He circled me atleast once. I don't know if he was afraid of geeting wooped or couldn't get down wind(the wind wasn't blowing at all).

Re: Rattling?? Anyone give it a shot yet this year??

i have Tim.

it's been almost 3 weeks now, but i had a decent 8ptr come down a hill after i grunted, bleated and tickled the rattle bag. i can't say for sure that he came down because of the rattling, but he definitely turned back downhill when i got his attention.

last saturday i brought back a little button buck with the rattle bag. i was trying to determine if he was indeed a button (which the property owner doesn't want us to kill) or a doe fawn.

i got no results with the rattle bag in Illinois last week.

i will be using the rattle bag pretty extensively next week.

My dad had a whopper( big 10) come in this morning to the same stand i killed my buck in friday morning. Unfortunatly shot under him by about 2 inches. The buck left and went to the food plot ( 125yrds) away and fed for 20 minutes then left like nothing happened. So things are getting warmed up.
