Practice Tips??

Welcome Loudoun County. I'm in Prince William fairly close.

This is only my second year bow hunting as well so there will be many others with far more experience that should have some good suggestions. As for me, I practice a lot at 15 yards then I go back to 20, 25, and 30 all from the ground. Since I hunt from a treestand, I also try shoot from a deck or other elevated position to help orient myself a little better.

Hope that helps. Look for more tips from others.

Try shooting at 20,30, and 40. Making good 40 yard shots will make the 20 yarders alot more confident. If you are hunting from a treestand, practice from a treestand. While there, come at full draw like you would on level ground and keep everything locked in place. Then pivot down the entire upperbody at the waist when shooting. And try shooting while sitting in the stand (preferably with the clothes you'll wear hunting). Also try shooting on the side of a hill, because you can easily get lefts or rights by canting the bow. A sight level comes in handy for this. And go to a local 3D shoot for fun.

Me personally, I would get consistent at 20 yrds, before moving out to 30. The more consistent you get, the more confident you will be at longer ranges. If you can't consistently group at 20 yards, there is no reason at all to be practicing at 30 or more. Take your time, be patient, and practice, practice, practice!

Well said... cool.gif

A basic sight pin set up would be 3 to 5 pins set to 10 yard intervals. Most just start at 20 yards since anything below that uses the same pin anyways...

I had mine set at 20, 30, 40, 50.

But heed the above advice before sighting it at all those ranges... JMO

Most deer are shot at or under 20 yards.... Just think of it that way... cool.gif

Re: Practice Tips??

Well, depending on the speed of your bow, you have a number of ways to set up your sights. You can do the standard 10,20,30 and so forth, or 20 30 40, and so on.

However, my bow is relatively fast so I only use 2 pins. The top one is good from 0-35 yards, second pin is a 40 yarder. If it's 36-40 yards, I just hold the 40 yard pin low on the chest and it'll squre the lungs perfectly. I may actually add a 50 yard pin this year just for kicks and giggles, but I'll never shoot that far at a deer.

Like someone else said, just practice, practice and practice some more. Get good @ 20 yards, then move to 25, and 30, and so forth. Shooting with the clothes you hunt in is a good idea, and so is practicing from an elevated position if you'll hunt from a treestand. Be sure to shoot with the broadheads you plan to hunt with as well since they will hit a little different than your field points most likely.

However, the main thing to remember is NOT TO OVER PRACTICE. If you are starting to get tired and spreading shots everywhere, just call it a day and go relax. Don't keep shooting, as you will start to try and force shots, or time shots when your pin crosses the bullseye, which in turn leads to punching the trigger on your release and other bad habits that you do not want to develop.

Good luck with your new hobbie, I must warn you though, it is ADDICTIVE!!!!!!! If you have any other questions, fell free to drop a PM wink.gif

Hey, im in Va too, in Chesterfield, but when you practice your shots, shoot the distance you would shoot when your hunting, such as 10,15,20,25,30, and maybe 35 yards, but just get comfortable with those distances, and you shouldnt have a problem.

Re: Practice Tips??

the best thing to do is just shoot shoot shoot. practicing and knowing your equipment is priceless. ive been bowhunting for 6yrs now and id say 80% of my shots have been less than 20yds. my farthest being 42 or 43. typically 3 pins work fine... 20yds, 30yds, and 40yds. do the time in the backyard when its hot and it will pay off when its cool.
