Re: Ground or Trees

I like being on the ground with my bow. I also like making nature blinds. I have about 3 in my woods. I use some old trees and put them in some thick cover. I'm a big guy (not fat by all means but tall). I don't have a good balance either and it feels akward to get in a stand. Feels like I'm gonna fall all the time.

I don't like blinds, unless they are made by me with things in the woods.

Re: Ground or Trees

I prefer still-hunting / spot-and-stalk and have had a lot of success with it. However, I am fortunate to have access to a lot of land.

I tried hunting from a treestand a couple of times to see what it was like, but once I got up in the stand all I could think about was how badly I had to take a leak. I tried hunting from a ground blind, but I don't have enough patience to sit and wait for deer to show up.

If you're able to be patient enough to sit all day for days on end, you'll have better odds tagging a big buck from a stand than from still-hunting. However, it's all about the enjoyment of the hunt, and I enjoy still-hunting way more than stand-hunting.

Re: Ground or Trees

I prefer to hunt from a tree stand for a couple of reasons.

1. So I can see where deer enter & exit. Where I hunt I have several locations from which deer can enter food plots, fields ect ect. & I can view them coming down trails from treestands.

2. With the size of some of the snakes I've seen in my area, I just don't feel comfortable sitting on the ground when the sun starts to set or before sun up.

Re: Ground or Trees

Both. Tree stand hunting is easier & has better vision. But I have found that as more people head up into the trees & educate the deer that it has become easier to take good bucks from well placed.......NATURAL ground blinds. Placed in areas that every other hunter avoid because there are no good trees.

I have just such a 3 year oldclear cut in mind for this fall grin.gif

Re: Ground or Trees

I spend probably 90% of my hunting time in a treestand. I like being up high. I do not still hunt unless it is drizzling or snowing, and I have a couple ground blinds that I use during muzzleloader season....

Re: Ground or Trees

It's really a personal choice. It also depends on the terrain you hunt and your choice of weapons. I prefer bowhunting so the majority of my hunting is from treestands or ground blinds. I have been able to pull off a few spot and stalk bowhunts for whitetail here at home and a spot and stalk bowhunt for mulies in Wyoming. Without a doubt. spot and stalk is more exciting. Unfortunately most of the cover I hunt here at home severely limits my ability to see very far unless I'm on the side of a steep ridge overlooking a bottom and the side of another ridge across the bottom. That's fine for hunting with a firearm but not with a bow.

Re: Ground or Trees

I didn't begin hunting on the ground till my son and I began hunting together. Now that that we hunt seperately, I still find myself hunting off the ground about 50% of the time. It is more of a thrill to be eye to eye with a deer on the ground, and the spots that I can set up on the ground by far out number the spots I can hunt from a tree.
