Going to step up my bowhunting game.

I'm getting tired of being busted by deer during bow season. I want my bowhunting skills to be stepped up. I'm going to order realtree advantage Timber Scent-Lock Suit. I wear Advantage Timber Bibs while hunting. I try and become human-scent-free, with little or no luck. Hope this helps my bowhunting skills.

Re: Going to step up my bowhunting game.

its more than just scent loc clothing and being scent free..

you still have to watch the wind even with scent loc.. i have used scentloc clothing for about 7 years now.. yes it did up my sightings on deer within shooting range.. but i went completely dedicated to being as scent free as i could..

that meant rubber boots , all my gear , and being concious about where i dressed and how i dressed going to the stand...

it also made me think out my stand placement.. i cant always predict where the deer will come from but having my stand in the correct spot and being well hidden and high enough does help..

keeping your scent above the deers nose is a big help.. i have gotten higher each year.. now i hang stands at 20 feet plus..

also approach to your stand and leaving it is part of it , not over hunting your stand ... stand prep should be well in advance of hunting season..

there are many other things we have to do to get our shot at deer . but just buying clothing and putting it on and expecting it to make a direct impact wont always work..

you need to think about the total package of being scent free ..

Re: Going to step up my bowhunting game.

Very good choice !!!

Before all of my hunts, I shower with scent killing shampoo and body wash, either from HS or Cabelas. I get out, and then apply scent killing deodorant as well. The clothes that I am wearing under my hunting clothes all get a liberal amount of Fall Blend scent killer and cover spray applied to them.

After driving to my spot, I unlock my plastic container and remove my Scent Lok suit, which also gets a liberal amount of Fall Blend, as does my fanny pack, bow, treestand, and anything else that may hold scent. Also, I wear knee high rubber boots with my pants tucked in to them. For the record, my Scent Lok suit and rubber boots are kept in a sealed platic bag inside of a sealed plastic container at all times until I am ready to put them on.

I usually only go about 15' in the air, and sometimes I will even hunt from ground blinds. Since buying my Scent Lok suit and starting the scent free process, I have NEVER been winded by a deer. I have had bucks, mature and young, and herds of does downwind of me for extended periods of time and not one of them has ever showed and signs of knowing I was there.

Re: Going to step up my bowhunting game.

Every time I hear of someone feeling that ScentLok or ScentBlocker clothing is gonna give them an edge over deer I feel compelled to have them read this link before deciding on spenting 2x the money on camo clothing.

If you dont want to read the whole thing then the basic jist of it is that its a proven fact the activated carbon does adsorb scent molecues, however its does so to an extreme rate, so that by the time you get the clothes off the store shelf, they are already clogged with scent.

Oh and there is no way anyone can "reactivate" the carbon either. That is unless you can reproduce 1700*F in an oxygen free environment which of coarse would burn off and camo fibers or the clothing itself.

Activated carbon is a one time use material.

The carbon sprays are a better choice. IMO

They stay air tight until use and can work like crazy for several hours before the carbon in them gets saturated.

Not JMO-its fact!

Re: Going to step up my bowhunting game.

Post all the "tests" you want, I will stick with my real world results. As mentioned before, since I bought the Scent Lok suit the only time I was ever busted is if they saw me move. Prior to the Scent Lok suit I still did the scent free shower and spray and all, but deer routinely picked me off when they got downwind.

So either the Scent Lok works, or all the deer here in PA that bed downwind of me, feed downwind of me, and just play downwind in general, are all stupid.

Re: Going to step up my bowhunting game.

For me I never noticed an difference with or without it on. I had been given a nice suit for x-mas a few years back so luckily I did not waste any money on the camo.

As a matter of fact I have had more deer closer to me last year then any year before when wearing the scent lok. I mean with 5 yard close as I was on the ground. Wind in and not in my favor too.

Like any other product, its personall preference.

The facts of how and why activated carbon works can not be disputed. They are facts, however feeling more confident in your equipment goes a long ways too.

I just can not endorse the clothing past a couple outings is all. Now the Carbon Blast spray, that satisfies all the requirements for actived carbon to work to your benifit.

Use what you want and buy what you want. Just be educated to what your using and know nothing on the market is a cure all. Or can make you invisable to a deers noce, ears, or eyes.

Just hunting the right wind, being as clean as possible, and being still for as much as possible is your best bet, and its cheaper too. LOL.

Re: Going to step up my bowhunting game.

my best advice to not getting sented is hunt funnels...that way 90% of your deer will come from 2 directions and you can hunt it when the wind is right. the best common funnel I have found (not the type that are written about in hunting mags, are fenceline funnels...where 2 fences meet the deer have a specific place on one of thoes that they prefer, and dozer trails...go to where the dirt isnt pushed up so high and hunt it...it works 2 deer last year off one of these

Re: Going to step up my bowhunting game.

I never bought the suit just because i don't have the money to spend on them.

But the past 3 seasons I have been so completely anal about my scent. I keep my clothes in rubber maid containers and douse them with scent killer before each hunt. I usually wash them about every 2 weeks or so in baking soda and hang dry them.

I also put pine boughs and cones in my rubber made to give a little outdoorsy smell.

Since i have started this regimen i have seen double the deer.

I am a scientist, so i like scientific evidence. My evidence comes from experiance.

I can't say the suits don't work, because i have never experimented with one.

But i have no desire to buy one.

Re: Going to step up my bowhunting game.

I put all my clothes in totes and I play the wind game. I put in a HS Scent "earth" wafer in my tote so I smell like the woods. This works for me as I haven't had a deer "snort" at me in a long time.

Checking the wind when I first get to the woods dictates where I will hunt. Playing the wind and taking care of your hunting clothes whether Scent loc or not are (2) ways to increase your odds and see more deer.

Remember your in their bedroom, they are there 24/7. If you went home today and your house smelled funny like a woman wearing perfume was in it or the dog did a you know what in the house, you would know that wouldn't you? .....and they have much better noses than ours.

Control your scent as best as you can and play the wind and you should see more deer. Good luck.

And if you do go with the Advantage Timber Pattern for your Scent Loc suit you couldn't have picked a better pattern to go with!! Best pattern out there in my opinion! smile.gif
